My daughters just started at Select. They don't practice as a team but instead in a giant group. Is this typical of other clubs? Three weekends of games and they didn't even seem to know each other out on the field. This is for both AP and Elite. Did we make the wrong choice going with Select? Being part of a team and knowing your team seems like a huge part of girl's youth soccer.

Here's a hint not everyone will tell you: It's not always about team performance rather individual development.

SSS does focus on individual over team. They also don't have a lot of coaches and it is cost effective for LL to do group training especially at the younger ages. The problem with this is a lot of bad habits occur because they are not correct.

I'm waiting for someone from the club to brag about their NT players. SSS may very well end up like Seacoast - felt they didn't have many options left for survival but playing in GDA also risks their undoing.

If the focus is individual development why would you need to train as a team? There are a few clubs that focus on individuals over team, especially at younger (pre-high school) ages.

“Did we make the wrong choice going with Select?”
Answer that question for yourself when your player is sitting on a full bench while players from the higher teams are brought down to guest play so they can get the win. Or when your player isn’t invited to certain events and only the stronger players are. It’s doing a huge disservice to the kids who are made to guest play as well, as their 11 year old bodies can’t keep up with practicing 3-4 times a week plus 2-3 games a weekend.
Select’s business model is to win as many games as possible at all costs to keep attracting new families to a “winning” program. The top U11-U13 players are often playing 2-3 games per weekend running all over the place just to score the W. Unfortunate for the lower level kids who lose playing time over it.

W-L record is meaningless all the time.
