but the men's tournament generates substantially more revenue than the women's competition. That money is subsequently passed along to participating federations by FIFA, soccer's global governing body.

The 2015 women's champion (United States) received $2 million, while the 2014 men's winner (Germany) got $35 million. For advancing to the knockout stage, the U.S. men earned $9 million. Much of that money is distributed among the players. The USSF has been pushing FIFA to increase women's earnings in future World Cups.

In general, the U.S. men and women have different salary structures: The men have contracts with individual pro teams and are compensated by the USSF for national team work only, while most of the women are paid by the federation to play in the NWSL and for the national team. (An exception is Crystal Dunn, who left the NWSL for English club Chelsea this winter and receives a prorated salary for national team duty.)
All.logical but still terrible optics, especially from an organization and sport that doesn't have a great reputation for supporting women

USSF has been at the forefront of supporting women's soccer. See the quotes from the article that they have been pushing FIFA

OP is right that the image publicly is very different. To the public a trophy is a trophy and the men have none. It fits into the well documented narrative that women aren't paid as much as men for similar work. The women's NT also would also disagree that the treatment is equal, and USSF is ten years late with GDA

Dig a little deeper .. challenge urban legends

The women got the contract they negotiated. When they renegotiated earlier this year they opted for a similar structure as in the past. If they disagree as you claim why ratify the same contract

The women are paid a salary for the entire year by USSF. USSF also props up their pro league. USSF pays for the women's benefits. The men are only paid for their time on the national team.

Men can actually live off what they make professionally. The women not so much

              But that's not fair.

You are right though ... that's why the women negotiated the contract structure they did. TWICE

In the end it wasnt about what was equal it was about what was the best for the women.

Don't believe the hyperbole of the negotiations

I don't understand that at all. If the women scheduled more friendlies, then maybe I could go see one. The demand seems to be there for them to play more often and make money at the gates. Someone clue me in on why they don't do that.

Maybe because they have to work regular jobs?

No seriously scheduling friendlies against who? Other countries? It isn't that easy to call up Colombia and say "want to play a game?"

Because commercial interest determines that. Do WNBA players make the same as NBA ? Do coaches make the same?

Women on the USSF gravy train have found a way to monetize nationalism at a level so far removed from the real commercial interest in the sport. They continue to harp on about equality and yet happily allow their own NWSL team mates to have a min salary of 15k. whilst they earn 200k +

They happily reupped for base salaries from USSF and limited NT allocations restraining the freedom of the coaches to call in players based on form - why / To preserrve their earnings.

The whole mens vs womens soccer argument is a bit tiresome. It just happens to fit a US based agenda in a sport where for years they were one of the few countries that actually cared.

                      Spot on ...

Not to mention USSF supports the women's pro league.

If it was truly fair. USSF wouldn't support their pro league and not pay them salaries based on their tenure.

They should let market forces determine their salaries and the success of their league. I think we all know what would happen then.
