Especially with Title IX, which begs the lingering question what's the point of marrying athletics (scholarships) with higher ed? Men's Football & Basketball are defacto farms clubs for the NFL & MLB the majority of the other sports are simply for participation and giggles.

The number one advice is to always pick a school they’d love to attend even without soccer because the soccer so often doesn’t pan out for all 4 years.

On the good side, he’s obviously a great player and will have no problem finding another spot at a different college if he made the mistake of picking UNM for soccer and no longer wants to go there.
Kinda like most football players go to Alabama for the education. Maybe you should give your wisdom to Nick Saban.

Truth. Soccer will be basically over after college but his college degree and career will last a lifetime. Always pick based on a college you love.

Another POV advocating the elimination of athletic scholarships. What say you?

Most players put college before sports, with the exception of Olympic athletes and those that can go pro in the sport and the ones with the delusional parents. The rest enjoy the beautiful game for what it is: a game.

Unfortunately not all do. They make compromises because they're chasing the dream. I just found out about a friend's daughter making some big compromises to attend one school (not nearly as good a program in her major or overall) because she's more likely to play at another program - and the soccer is not nearly as good there either! I sincerely hope it works out for her and that she isn8leftbeith regrets later on. The odds of playing all four years is not great. Athletes shouldn't go in expecting their sport to go away but they should also be realistic that it might.

Parents are the problem. All too often I see the story of parents pushing a girl to go to any college, no matter how low, as long as they can play soccer. To each their own but most of those girls will end up with a useless degree, loads of debt and meager prospects. Having played soccer at some cruddy college isn’t going to sooth the sting much. Funny thing is they’re failing their children and brag about it on social media.

For the abundantly funded fringe female collegiate sports that get title ix trickle down athletic aid, it's truly laughable that a girl only armed with a 2.5 gpa and has checked the box 'showing interest' in playing in college has schools wanting her to be part of their 'program' and has plenty of aid to offer.

                  Warped stuff.

I’ve seen this too. Not uncommon. Sad.

The smart girls use soccer as a hook to gain admittance to super competitive colleges. For those families money isn’t a problem. They just want their dd to be one of the 6% admitted. Not a bad strategy.

A strategy that doesn't always work. A player still has to be desired. Not all will be especially if they aim too high above their weight class for soccer or academics. D3 schools your grades have to be very close. There's more wiggle room with D1 especially if the coach really wants you. But coaches will use their admissions favors for the players they really want. If you're interchangeable with another player with better grades you may be out of luck

All women's college teams need filler on the roster of 28, it's not like anyone that actually goes to the college for academics is interested in playing soccer for the school. This is a GIRLS sport not a BOYS sport. Duhhhh.

Backdoor baby, thanks to low interest and title ix. Working wonders. Yeah!

My friend’s dd settled for a lesser academic & soccer school so she could have a bigger role on the soccer field. Had a career ending injury mid way through freshman year. She regretted not having chosen a school she liked better outside of soccer.

Did the school honor her scholarship? If not, then why didn't she transfer when soccer was out of the picture?
