In April the list will be culled down to 16 boys who will be accepted as Timbers academy players starting in the fall.

These are highly structured training sessions with great competition.
The total count looked closer to 45 boys last night. Although, they said numbers may fluctuate in the next few weeks. But yes, a great competitive environment last night. Looking forward to seeing where this goes in the next few weeks.

That makes no sense, why separate groups by their club affiliation? More of the same preferential treatment. I’m sure the ratios of the final selections will be inline with the ID session ratios right?? Or more likely those 20 non-alliance kids are competing for four spots. This isn’t about choosing the best players, we all know it, and you know it.

Some of the non alliance clubs don't participate in Timbers Academy scouting activities, and some are outright hostile. Alliance clubs, as part of the deal, refer their top players to the Timbers, and don't try to stop them from leaving.

I always find it amusing when some people argue that the Timbers ignore the kids at their club--until one leaves, then they whine about poaching.

I would not assume that the 12 kids from Alliance clubs have secure spots, and the others are competing for the last four.

          1. Get out of here with your complaints. If you can’t get a kid to come to the timbers academy then you’ve got a problem not the other way around.

          2. We should do a count with how many kids go to the Timbers academy to be underdeveloped and over blown with ego to then be worse when they get back to their original club teams.

          3. When there are more mis management of local players than successes there is no reason why anyone should be gifting the TA with players.

Your numbers are off on the first session. The November/December sessions of 2008 boys from Alliance clubs was about 36-38 kids. Of those 36-38, only 12-14 were invited back to the second discovery session which started last night. They then added 20+ non-alliance 2008 kids with a few more to be added in the coming weeks. So the 2008 pool is at about 36 for 16 full time spots that will be filled in April. There will also be about 8-10 part time and practice players that will be selected from that 36.

It looked like the 07 group is much smaller - about 14 there last night, culled down from about 22 in Nov/Dec, but that's probably because they aren't picking a full roster. Not many 07 spots will be open, other than part-time/practice spots.

              1. At least one club last year was reportedly threatening players with being benched if they showed up at a TA tryout.

              2. They all seem to be going to UPDX rather than to their original clubs.

              3. "Gift"? You prove my point; the players are not "yours". If you don't want to help the Timber scout, that's your business, but then don't whine about players at TA clubs getting more opportunities.

                1. Should treat them like any other club. Perhaps the Timbers Academy would be ok with scouts from club teams coming around and selling BS.

                2. UPDX is a mediocre club but I know a few coaches over there that give more of an effort about individual players rather than the TA coaches who could care less.

                3. Actually when they are on the team they are part of that team and club. You have no right to them nor should whine about not getting players from clubs.

Sorry, but do the work instead of wanting other people to do your job for you.

It's so cute when the nonprofits think they are peers of Timbers Academy.

                  1. If the Timbers were to threaten players for attending the tryouts of another club, that would be rude. Timbers are not doing this.

                  2. Not at UPDX and have no comment.

                  3. We're talking about tryout season, generally, looking for the following season. A player may be "part of" a team and club, but the club has no claim on the player (in Oregon) beyond a year's financial commitment. Many of the clubs doing the whining about Timbers "poaching" their players are among the most active at recruiting from their fellow youth clubs.

At any rate, clubs should make up their mind: Either a) promote yourself as a pathway to the Timbers, and if you feel your kids are being unfairly ignored, speak out, or b) discourage your players from going up to the Timbers. But "the mean Timbers are ignoring our players, but I hope that they tell the Timbers no" is ridiculous. If your club is one that discourages players from moving up, don't complain when they look at other clubs, and if kids who are angling for a TA spot then are less interested in your club.

Having a pulse is a pathway to the Timbers youth program, Fact.

It's a path that has a dead end for Oregonians.

Better stated, it leads you right back to the mediocre club environment you started at.

It's a wonderful cycle of futility and self enrichment.

All in this courageous journey to nowhere.

                    Same as it ever was.

                      1. Threaten yeah sometimes. Brainwash? Of course.

                      2. But it’s not hard to find a coach anywhere that gives two f more about the players than the TA coaches who care more about private training money and coaching gear. That is an easy one.

                      3. Clubs shouldn’t promote any pathway to the Timbers. Timbers isn’t a pathway up, it’s a path to nowhere and sometimes worse than when you left. How do you not see this?

                      4. No one is saying they are ignoring anyone. People just want these propaganda where players go to die places like the TA or thorns for that matter to piss off and stop BS kids around.

                          I don’t get it

I don’t understand the issue If you play for a club that doesn’t support sending players to the Timbers Academy why would you be surprised that the Timbers coaches aren’t all that interested in your player, you are playing for a club that doesn’t what to send players to the Timbers Academy!

If you play for club that doesn’t support the Timbers Academy why do you even care.

                          Duh !

Sounds like only a bad parent would want their kids to make the TA.

That’s fine and all, but TA is the best game in town, hands down, end of story. What that means is Portland as a soccer community is beholden to a self serving, closed off, highly political organization. Who suffers? The kids that could be and maybe even should be on TA but aren’t because their club isn’t one of the chosen ones. We should expect and demand better from TA, they should want to lead by example, but nope, this is what we get. I don’t care, but I’m very very disappointed for our soccer community.
