Totally agree. Ten years of BDA and we still can't compete internationally and US developed players losing spots to international players. Half the MLS draft was internationals as well. As the national teams do worse and MLS teams can't bring in big name Europeans to attract crowds, interest will wane in the sport from its already low point. As it is sponsors were scrambling when the MNT didn't make the cut. If we want to protect US players the way Trump wants to protect the US steel industry then protect away. It will only make us worse.

This is not the mindset in Germany, which restricts foreign players at all levels, and has one of the top 3 pro leagues and the best national team in the world. Maybe we should learn from the best?

No other country wants our players. There's a reason for that - our players aren't very good. In addition, only in the US are sports intertwined with a University education. Abroad you go to school to go to school (often times for free or a very low cost). Like it or not we operate in a global economy which means you have to be able to compete. We can't compete.

To do that we need

- a soccer culture
- an organization that knows what it is doing
- highly trained coaches teaching kids from 5 years and up, not just as they get older
- professional clubs in the top 200 major metro markets, not 35, that can afford to run programs
- a unified pyramid system with promotion/relegation not leagues A-M
- smaller geography/less travel
- affordable soccer that doesn't shut kids out
- ability for clubs to profit from developing players

Let me know when you can make that happen. Until then Germany can continue to kick azz because they have all of that. So does pretty much all of Europe, Central and South America and increasingly Asia.
