The Boston Globe reported Friday that team owner Robert Kraft sent the plane to fly survivors and the families of victims of the Feb. 14 shooting in Parkland, Fla., to the nation's capital.

Kraft's decision came at the behest of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, the Globe reported.

Giffords and Kelly are among the country's most prominent advocates for stricter gun control laws. They founded Giffords, a gun violence prevention group, after the former congresswoman was nearly killed in a shooting in 2011.
