    DA for 06/07 age group

Is it me or is this a crazy play from US Soccer to try and control everything? Now they are targeting 4th graders. Really? So weed out and eventually burn out little kids through pressure and specialization before middle school and puberty. Love it!!

It's what you call a money grab by US Soccer and the six clubs in Oregon touting it for profit. This is a lab test. Let's take 75 boys in Oregon and make them all do the exact same curriculum.. boring.. non-creative... so after four years we can weed out the top five... and then blend them at U16 in Timbers Academy with the really good and talented multi-athlete outliers that didn't buy into the bs.

USSDA requires kids to play multiple sports. Our '04 DA had professional futsal training for 42 sessions, they played basketball, badminton and handball during the year. That is in conjunction to combat training. 3-4 days a week with a wide variety of activities was great. My son has had the most fun this year.

the theory - which I agree with - is that the base of players needs to be broadened at the younger ages so that they are better trained and more can be eyed for id purposes. Then it funnels into a narrower pool as they get older. That's all good.

Now how that training happens I agree with the above poster - much of it is too rigid and formulaic. If a DA club near you isn't that great in terms of coaching and developing then there's no harm in staying out of the system for awhile (assuming you can find a club that is good at development). Plenty of DA teams have high churn at the holder ages and they have few will toss players for new ones if they're good.

The player ID selection process is absurd for children this young.

It depends on who is doing the selecting. You can absolutely tell which players of this age have ability.

Now, if you have evaluators who don't know their business (this is most of them, to be honest) then you are correct.

Dont' worry - at least half won't be in the system by U15 anyway

ID process should begin after U14 and kids have grown. Clubs buying into this should be ashamed. The end result will be some great 9 year old athletes now becoming great mediocre athletes in five years.. and some truly amazing and smart prospective players dropping out in 5th grade because they didn't make the squad.

u14 is too late. The kids that will make it need elite environments by u12, and perhaps even by u11.

What's needed is to remove physical maturity as a criteria for selection, and replace it with technique, tactical awareness, and mentality.

Relax. It's still very much influx between U12 to U14 with lots of players coming and going. It gets tougher to break into the system once you hit U15 and older, but even then well run clubs cut players for new players all the time, as they should. The purpose of lowering DA into U12 was - as someone said above - to broaden the player pool and get them better trained at a younger age. Do all the clubs know what the F' they're doing? Of course not. But the concept behind it is sound. Players who are really committed will keep at it despite the obstacles. Not making a squad at U12 isn't career ending, only if you let it be.

So you have effectively weeded out most low income kids here. This mentality is everything that is wrong with US Soccer today. By u11??? Those are ten years olds.

That's a problem endemic in the entire system - it's not affordable for many families especially over the course of a youth soccer career. The odd scholarships here and there isn't enough and free MLS tuition to those lucky enough live near a team and get noticed is far too narrow a pool of players

Sorry, how is that weeding out low income kids?

And yes, they are 10. DA is not meant to be a rec program. Most 10 year-olds will be better served by playing in recreational environments.
