Thorns have given up on GDA in Oregon

They finally realize they've lost the battle for Oregon's best players to the ECNL clubs so they're moving on to Northern California where they are partnering with De Anza. Of course, De Anza will still be putting their "A" teams in ECNL but this gives the "B" teamers a chance to wear a Thorns badge...

Not expanding exactly. More like shifting their focus away from Oregon. Can't say I'm surprised really. Their academy has been nothing but a failure for the last 3 years.

And you fools think these academy teams - 6 of them now! - will be fully funded by the vast profits the Thorns pro team is making. What a bunch of fools.

You to can pay $1000's of dollars to 'train' at the equivalent of an RTC only to lose out to a norcal B team player for playing time.

100% all in? With what? The salary she makes announcing for women's soccer every four years?

Exciting news for Thorns. Exciting for older girls to be a part of something bigger than their local club (FCP or CU) that has a watered down ECNL option but still feels "small time". Good luck to Portland and California Thorns GDA!!

Should be fun paying to travel to NorCal and then sit on the bench in favor of the cali girls.

I really feel bad for the the Idaho B team players, that's a lost cause. At least the couple of Oregon girls that make it through the RTC will have someone to talk to on the pine.

pretty cool to see the expansion. can't imagine it will be free though...otherwise the thorns would spend the same amount on some 14 year old from california as they spend on a roster player?

Thorns has been a money loser from day one. Don't expect them to be around for much longer.

Marritt is rich. He'll cover the costs no problem.

He's loaded. Merritt will come through in the end. I believe.

They were never that interested when we were involved so it doesn't surprise me.

8 teams now that GDA is splitting 2003s & 2004s. The Oregon GDA will have 4 and the NorCal GDA will have 4. I'm guessing NorCal players will see more $$. Oregon girls will be more than happy to pay to play.
