    Whining About Vacations

The complaints about Spring Break and Memorial Day are so incredibly obtuse and self-centered. This is intended to be a STATE WIDE program. If they schedule tryouts and Friendship Cup during school, then you are excluding the kids from Bend, Eugene, Medford, Klamath Falls (who drive hours just to train), and those from every other place outside of Portland from participating in those events. It can’t be about appeasing the Portland-centric parents who are always the first dog at the bowl. It needs to serve all the kids and families participating in the program. But if you want those kids excluded (or missing school) so you and your snowflake can go to the coast, then so be it.

Many people view these trips as equally memorable to their vacations.

Why not squeeze them in other times? It would help get coaches as well.
Who in their right mind puts tournaments on thanksgiving or spring break. No wonder people aren’t excited about it.

That’s got to be a joke. There isn’t really a tournament on Thanksgiving break is there? Why would they do that? Talk about short sighted. Balance and family are way more important than a soccer game.

they would do that because most professionals i know LOVE to play futbol on the holidays. If you can win a trophy on a holiday it makes it that much more special.

the ODP interregional tournaments have been on Thanksgiving for at least a handful of years now. Dallas Cup next year is March 25th to April 1, spring break for some folks. Disney Soccer Showcase is December 27th - 31, Chistmastide if not actually Christmas.

it makes sense, to me, to schedule a big event around a big event because it's reasonable that people will have at least some time off to get to the tournament. i just assumed that these pros and future pros made the tournament the vacation they are taking for the holiday, and make the best of it. playing soccer to travel is basically the reason I played.

(it's also one of the reason that many of you say "tournaments are just fine the way they are, my kids have no problem with playing 5 games in two days, because they are with their friends and they get to go to new places.")

Tough it up. ODP is not great but it’s better than sitting around with family eating a bunch of Ruffles and drinking gallons of sugary drinks. At least they are outside in the fresh air not hanging out with long lost relatives who are only there for the food and to “borrow” some cash.

Good point. I always leave cash at home when I go to family events but apparently they take Visa/MC now for loans.

If it’s so awful why are so many ECNL girls doing it?

If you are committed to the program, missing family holidays should not be a concern. US Soccer sees this as a serious job.

The focus should not be on college and family. Forget those. It should be about going pro.

They do this to minimize the amount of missed school days.

Unfortunately that means a conflict with holidays.

It is obvious that there is a group of people on this thread that don't care about school. If they did it during non holidays, I am sure you will have another group of people complaining about missed school days. You can't please everyone.

Are the "ODP Regional Champions" Phoenix rosters posted online? Schedule shows rosters posted on Timbers website Dec 19th but don't see them. Anyone have link?

                            Timbers will post the rosters.

ODP used to be good. What happened?

The Timbers happened - just like everything else that has gotten worse in Oregon youth soccer since they got involved.
