GDA U14/15 (03/04) Will be Split (not combined) Next Year

    Academy Directors and Club Leaders:

First off, thank you for your feedback. Since meeting in Chicago last month, your input has been instrumental in determining the next steps and planning future Academy programming. Specifically, your interest in adding additional age groups for the launch of the Girls’ Academy is aligned with the Academy philosophy for creating a clear player pathway.

With an eye towards an improved everyday environment where players can continue to grow, the U.S. Soccer Girls’ Development Academy plans to split the U-14/15 age group into two single-aged teams at U-14 (2004) and U-15 (2003) for its inaugural season in 2017/18. The strategic initiative to increase the player pool at the younger Academy ages, is part of a long-term goal of expanding to single age groups in order to further develop female players.

At the Girls’ Academy launch in Chicago on December 15th, the Academy sought feedback, input and questions in small-group settings from club presidents and Academy Directors. This plan to expand the base of the Academy structure addresses the topic most frequently discussed from the clubs.

The Academy is aware that clubs may have questions surrounding the plan for expansion. Therefore, a webinar is scheduled on Thursday, January 19th at 1:00 pm CT for all Girls’ Academy Clubs. Topics such as Academy structure, travel, events, roster management, and budgets will be discussed.

Please feel free to share this email with your club community as you plan for the year ahead. We look forward to next the webinar and to continue working with each of you and your club.

But I thought the combined age groups were designed to ensure girls had maximum development opportunities by playing against and with older teammates every other year? GDA can't seem to decide what it wants to be. Sad.

Gotta get them in the pipeline. Stuff in a ton a ton of leads and opportunities in the funnel and manage that so you hit that .0002% for USNWT sales target. Sales and Marketing 101 people. Get with the program.

This model is better. The good 03s didn't want to play with younger...and the 04s didn't want to compete for a roster spot against the top 03s.

Just because there are separate teams doesn't mean they cannot train together.

It's about money and power, pure and simple. Squash ECNL and the rest be dammed. the 99.99999% that won't be NT or even pro players are cannon fodder

Yeah you'd think so, but no. It's about maximizing the number of teams per club to maximize profits, and latch onto players as quickly as possible. Think of it as Coke and Pepsi fighting for marketshare

It's more like Pepsi (US Soccer) fighting for the marketshare of sales with the Cul de sac 'lemonade stand' run by little girls in Lake Oswego & Hillsboro (Crossfire Utd & FC PDX).

Good luck to the Pioneer spirit and resources of our local girls and parents vs US Soccer DA.

                  Any bets?

                    2003s will be 8th & 9th graders
                    2004s will be 7th & 8th graders

Good for US Soccer to get them early. Girls develop & reach puberty earlier than boys so they Should be starting at least at the 5th/6th grade 2006 level before they are past prime soccer development ages. Still have no idea why they're bothering with the older ages to start. Start with ulittles & bring them up through. The numbers are much higher at the younger ages also.

Just that much more likely that Thorns Academy will fail. Couldn't field 2 teams this year, now they expand to 4? Good luck with that. Maybe they'll play in OYSA 3rd division instead of 2nd. Does Beaverton Cup have a "Dirt" division?

Nah, a number of big clubs in this country are given the finger to the DA.

I will bet that Crossfire and FC will be better in the long run by keeping a distance from the Timbers borg.

Just look what putting the Timbers logo has done to once proud clubs in Portland - not good!

04s make sense. 03s could be good espescially for girls going into 8th who are losing lots of players on their current teams to HS in the Fall. The writing has been on the wall for ECNL so the top girls will try out for GDA.

No top girls have ever tried out for Thorns Academy. Why start now?
