If you don't like the atmosphere or culture at a local club you can leave at anytime, but they don't refund you any of your monies.

With the DA programs you can leave anytime you want and you don't have a financial obligation to pay them anything. This is a far better position to be in.

    Jus saying.
You are being intentionally disingenuous. Academy players are not allowed to choose on their own whether or not to play high school sports including soccer (in spite of the many, many studies showing that diversity in sports is good for the athlete). They are not allowed to do other extracurriculars if they conflict with academy (4 days of practice a week, 1-2 days travel per week, 1 game day per week means every day is a conflict). They are not allowed to play soccer for "fun" in any capacity - 3x3 or futsal leagues and tourneys included (some kids really enjoy those).

For some families the cost savings will make giving up those freedoms worthwhile. For others the restrictions are deal breakers. Luckily we have other choices and the competition should (in theory at least) make all programs better.

The first choice the player makes is to forego Playing HS if they are selected for a DA program. Players choice of course and parents typically support the child.

What reason would a parent give to a kid to demand they play in HS? The fact they aren't allowed to bring the cowbell to Academy games unlike HS games?

Time management for extra curricular activities is always on the table.

Sorry you didn't provide any specific family decisions you lose with a kid choosing to play in the DA, other than the cowbell.

      Next.

ECNL costs about $5500 per year.

Thornz will be about $3000 per year.

ECNL will play elite level teams and get tons of college offers.

Thornz will play crappy showcases like Beaverton cup and las angeles versus B and C teams. Thornz= # Parthtocommunitycollege.
Most kids will want to play in high school sports.

The GDA isn't designed to attract most kids, only the best of the best kids and those kids really don't care about playing HS. Most kids who belong at the HS level will continue, so no need to worry. You're safe.

The showcases admittedly weren't very good but the kids still had fun.

Hmmm... there is a tough choice.

                      What to do.

Everyone knows most ECNL kids still pay for privates.. heck half of them are still training with MJ Tate. At GDA the program should provide enough development and in the right way that the private sessions should no longer be necessary.

Thorns has been a poor program to date. Many kids won't have anything to do with them for that reason. Then you take high school sports off the table. That removes a large number of top players. Next the required four trainings a week and traveling 15 times a year which requires missing school and vacations. Lack of homework time will take away serious students. Not much left after all those filters.

ECNL got 40 college signing this year.
Other TA clubs got about 40.
                            Thorns no comment.

CU and FC P have been running the same broken model for decades. The only trend over the last 3 years has been spend, spend, spend on travel with no on field achievement and what really sucks if fewer opportunities for the girls to get college scholarships.

If they can't figure out it sucks and is a joke and the two local clubs aren't willing to combine efforts to form an elite team for Oregon and the NWSL Portland Thorns GDA can and are willing to pay for it. I say bring it on!

Let's finally get Oregon back on the map vs being Road kill on the map.

The best soccer players might not all care about HS soccer but many of them are also stars in other sports. Giving up HS & all other soccer, all other sports & missing lots of school isn't worth it for many of the best. Don't forget, the true best can do whatever they want (Ecnl or Local club) and will still get the same recruitment. The best don't need to give up everything to play GDA.
