NYCSL Metro League - What's the point?

So the Metro League was created by NYCSL for the purpose of having clubs prove themselves before being promoted to NPL. And before even a single game was played, three clubs from the Metro League have been accepted to play in the NPL in the fall.

If I was one of those other clubs that was talked into playing in the Metro league, I'd be pretty pissed right now.

    That's a great point ... that doesn't make a lot of sense

Also, who were the 3 teams that were kicked out of NPL. Did the go back to Metropolitan league or just go else where

The Metro League played in the fall. Can't really complain about Atletico being added to NPL as they are one of the better programs in the tri-state area. Quickstrike had the top team in '04 and '03 in the Fall Metro league and multiple White Plains teams finished well too.

Not really sure where you're coming from with this.

A different poster. It seems awful quick for clubs to be promoted after 1/2 season

Atletico didn't play in the Metro league in the fall.

On the other hand, if metro/npl effectively became a relegation/promotion system, that may not be a terrible thing. Though it would go against the stated purpose of the NPL (that it's about development, not wins) and good individual teams would be screwed each time as their fates were tied to the merits of their overall club.

It seems like they will use Metro to be a holding tank for Clubs who are looking to be promoted into NPL. Perhaps the clubs aren't ready to field teams at all levels or there aren't any oprnings

I don't see it as a promotion and relegation. It's more a second division. I don't believe the clubs they replaced were relegated to Metro but more just left for other leagues

Did NPL abandon their "NPL Only/First" rule officially or are they just looking the other way again in letting Atletico in?

The idea behind the NPL was to establish a proper developmental league where kids could be allowed to make mistakes on the field without having to worry about losing or being relegated. It also has the goal of re-establishing proper practice-to-game ratio's. For example, from the NYCSL web-site.

"clubs should play in leagues that provide meaningful games, allow establishment of the proper training-to-game ratio, and eliminate calendar congestion."

Atletico having teams registered in two or three leagues at the same time as well as a heavy tournament schedule outside of the NPL showcases does not conform to that ideal. In addition, Atletico's heavy schedule leads to tons of conflicts. HBC was thrown out of the NPL in it's first season for playing in multiple leagues which led to conflicts which in turn led to cancelled and rescheduled games.

Didn't know Atleticos past history. Thanks

So either they will conform to the NPL standards or get kicked out like HBC did

Perhaps they played that many games in the past to get better competition which will be unnecessary now that they are in NPL. Perhaps they will continue and get in trouble

The NPL standards are actually quite rigorous. Atletico produces great teams but they are basically a 2 man operation (ok, 4, but 2 handle almost everything) that own a couple of small indoor facilities. They fail to meet at least half the standards. To be fair, so do many of the existing NPL clubs such as Brentwood. NPL was meant to be a true training ground for the elite but like everything else on LI it turned into a for-profit status league based on winning only.

I don't think anybody got kicked out. The site still lists 13 teams!

The fact that NYCSL NPL is skipping so many of the standards can only mean one thing - that Gary is about to get a board seat at US Club Soccer or NPL and thus is protected from being reprimanded.
