Not a bad showing. Both nycfc and LAFC have very good academy programs.

Does anyone know when tryouts for the '06s will be held?

(Prior two days before club tryouts for 05 and 06, essentially).

If a coach hasn’t already reached out to you don’t waste your money. Numbers 1-15 on the 06 team have already been invited.

Psshhh. They have a core group (i.e. 7 or 8 kids) that no one is going to argue with, but they've done very little scouting. If you can ball, go. They'll see you. It's not that complicated.

Generally, if you're an 06 who plays up regularly with an 05 DA team, you're either a lock or have a very good shot.

Are they telling the kids that we’re already invited to the team not to attend the tryouts? That’s what they did last year.

That's how most high-quality sports teams operate. They scout the players they want and invite them to join. It's commonly known as "recruiting".

Do D1 college teams, let alone professional teams, routinely hold open tryouts? No.

For those used to (allegedly) democratic nature of an open tryout, the one day of the year on which all kids are supposedly created equal, the notion that the Timbers Academy recruits most of its players may seem a bit unseemly. But the further up the food chain you get, that's how it works more and more.

(And even open tryouts aren't entirely "fair"--an established player at a club isn't likely to be cut on the basis of one bad tryout. A borderline player, OTOH, might--and might be at a disadvantage if some other club's borderline player comes in and has a good day and takes his spot).

This despite the fact that some clubs have a "no club kit" rule at tryouts. They know who their own players are, even if they aren't wearing the uniform that day.

So why then tell pre-selected kids not to attend? Wouldn’t they want to see how the others compare to the high quality players they already have recruited? Last year quite a few of the recruits weren’t exactly TA material.

Was anyone who showed up at last year's tryout, and cut/not selected, demonstrably better than kids invited to join?

I know lots of people think that Really Good players refused TA; fair enough. It doesn't matter whether a kid tried out or was invited in that case, if they declined they declined and are not on the team.

I'm talking about players that DID try out and were turned down. (Or obvious top players who were not recruited at all--keeping in mind that failure to recruit doesn't necessarily mean that TA has decided against that player; they may not have enough information to make a decision, in which case he should come to the tryout if he's interested).

(Also, keep in mind that much development happens at this age. Who the best player was in May of 2017 may not be the best player in April of 2018).

Yes, there were several kids that tried out last year that were, and still
are, FAR better than three of the players that were “recruited”.

Of course, last year there was the matter of Draco, Crabb, and Goyle on the team. Are there any rich daddies greasing the 06 team?

Top '07s shouldn't shy away either.
