Revolving door at US YNT continues

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/sbisocc...u-17-coach/amp
^^^Boy’s side of US YNT continues to have coaching turnover. Seems like annual changes now. This requirement to live near the USSF Chicago HQ isn’t helping. Half the time they are training down in FL and most people work remotely now so why the requirement? Is USSF trying to make our USMNT jobs unappealing on purpose?

So, is to live in Chicago is the now the key factor in who gets hired or do you need to be related to somebody named Berthalter?

Sounds like USSF picked a real winner for their new U-20 USMNT HC:

“Hudson totaled an 8-26-9 record in regular-season play with the Colorado Rapids. Prior to his short MLS stint, Hudson was the manager of both the New Zealand and Bahrain Men’s National Teams, totaling a 12-13-14 combined record for both countries.”

Yeah, but he’ll move to Chicago.
At least we know that as a coach at Bahrain you face death after failure...he should fit right in.

Wait, so being asked to move near a corporate office for a job is new?

Should they be spending more time training teams where it is they are training, or more time at corporate HQ? They can Skype into meetings from around the world or fly in from time to time. You can't Skype coaching.

Agreed. Berhalter planned a January training in Qatar before cancelling it due to the Iran situation. You can’t get further from HQ’s than that. The HQ should be moved out of Chicago to be closer to a warm weather training facility.

Well, since the teams are all over the place unless there is a camp, that means 90% of their time is spent outside of training. That time should be in scouting or other administrative tasks. A centralized location within the country is actually a good idea.

Wicky looked like a good hire, but as usually USSF screwed up and brought him in late (March for a May Concacaf qualifier and way too late to train a team for WC less than 6 months later) and didn’t lock him in to a longer term contract beyond the WC. They treat these coaching positions like temp jobs.

Even worse with players who get called up for a couple week’s camp or a qualifier game and are never heard from again. There is no continuity, no team building, not enough time to train. The whole system is designed for failure. Other successful countries don’t do it this way. Heck, look at Wicky when he was at FC Basel. They made him coach up thru the U14-19 teams before giving him a senior team to take the UEFA Championship final 16. No body brings a coach and different sets of players in 6 months before a WC and seriously expects to win other than USSF.

But completely unnecessary if you're going to be on the road most of the time scouting. How many "administrative" tasks does a coach have that can't be handled with modern technology from anywhere?

Limiting themselves to someone willing to live in Chicago was just another dumb move of many.

They can move. Again, this isn't unusual. I've passed up opportunities to move to a corporate location vs. staying at a remote spot. I eventually relented when the right opportunity comes along.

People get moved/transferred/etc. every day in life. If you are really good, they really want you and you really want the job, you'll move.

I don't see the hand-wringing over this one.

The hand-wringing comes from not being able to attract competent coaches to what should be a dream job representing the US and leading our youth in international competition. Instead, jobs go unfilled. It’s not that Chicago isn’t an attractive city, but the toxic environment at USSF HQ is well documented. If you have a job that people want, yes then you are require people to uproot their families and move for it. But when you have positions that sit empty, then it’s time to change your approach. No one who is any good is going to make that move when your MO is to bring someone in for a six month job and shoot them after the next failure that is the result of your own stupidity.

                            And the talent sucks.
At least Roy Williams at UNC hoops acknowledges it when it occurs

And if the hire is really good the organization will accommodate. Do you still use a fax machine too?

This isn't a corporate job that requires 30+ hours of meetings with office staff week in and week out. You're supposed to be out training and scouting players. Given the sh*t show that is USSF (like someone pointed out) no one really good wanted to move. Not worth it. So they took someone who would move.
