    ODP v CLub Conflicts

We are new to club soccer and ODP, and have realized that there are going to be a couple of conflicts where there's an ODP practice the same day that the club has a tournament. We think they are both important so are not sure how to prioritize. What's the best way to handle this?

Different clubs have differing opinions on the value of ODP. Best bet is talk with your coach about it. Read for subtle clues - coach may say it's ok to miss club practice/games but in reality he doesn't want you to miss anything.

Our old club valued ODP (a long time ago) and so they were OK with missing practices, even games, for ODP practices or games resp. However, if you choose ODP over the club, then don't be annoyed or surprised if the club coach plays another kid, who attends all practices and games, over your child. You make your choice and the coaches make theirs.

That is exactly right. ODP training is not what we expected. We missed most of the team's Sunday futsal games last winter and now regret it. And yes, I think the futsal games did more to improve our team's footskills than ODP.

Here comes the anti ODP onslaught. Folks it is an ID program, not a training program. The first thing to do is come to grips with what that means and then make your decisions on whether or not you are going to blow things off. Here's a clue though, if your kid is getting id'ed by ODP then your club coach is not likely to sit them. That means they are an impact player and only foolish coaches sit impact players for a stupid reason like attending another practice. It sure aint like they are blowing practice off for a movie or sleep over.

Let's set the record straight. It's a training program. In a best case scenario you may receive some worthwhile training.

The players that do ODP are the ones that are not quite the best on the team and their parents feel that they can catch up with some ODP training or maybe make the national team and get a step up on their teammates.

The best players don't bother with ODP. Plus, it has gotten too expensive to even consider.

I think it's a personal choice. I will say that I have never heard of a player missing a club tournament so they can go to an ODP practice. As someone else pointed out, if your kid is not one of the top players on their club team and chose to attend ODP events instead of club ones, then there's a good chance they will not start or play extended minutes on their club team. If they feel that ODP is a better option for their development, then that's what they should do.

Uh huh. That makes total sense. Keep telling yourself that.

It's actually very true. There are many players doing ODP that wouldn't even be near the top third of their club team. In fact, I have seen players cut from teams who are on ODP. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule.

ODP is no longer an ID opportunity like it used to be. There is barely even a college coach to be found at regionals and even just a handful at Nationals. However, it still is a resume' builder. It's just another thing a kid can put on his profile. Not much value outside of that right now I'm afraid.

Not really sure why you are asking since all parents were told at first day of ODP that club comes first.

I am assuming that it some us club soccer coach or administrator who once again is starting a thread to bash ODP so everyone can chime in on how bad ODP is and how great your club is .

Simple... all ODP staff have been told for several years now that CLUB comes first.

The ODP staff will not even ask your kid why he didn't show up to practice . It common courtesy if your kid does tell them in advance.

Not true. ODP coaches basically told us to show up for every practice or don't come back.

Wrong (or misinformation). Attendance is kept with the expectation that the player will participate on a consistent basis.
