As to the 14-yr old boys question, the short answer is Yes, if they are 10-yr olds.
For the purpose of this discussion the best "Athletes" refers to raw potential.
Those athletes need the requisite nutrition, support, and "10,000 hours". if 10-year olds in this country PLAYED (on their own) soccer, watched soccer, revered soccer teams, and saw their older brother's friend Get Paid! through soccer, we would most certainly produce some BA soccer players with finely tuned soccer physiques. That ain't happenin' an we ain't producing em.
    1) How are you measuring "raw talent"? What does it look like? How can I pick it out?
    2) You're able to tell who the best athletes are at 10?
    3) You do realize that your points make the argument against "our best athletes don't play soccer" right?

I come to TS for a distraction, thwat man with his same sex lover posts is funny, which I appreciate, and that makes it helpful to me. So once again your statement is wrong.
I'm glad you got a giggle out of low-level jokes that went out of style in High School. Now you can go bash to bashing coaches, comparing clubs by numbers on a computer screen and researching accuracy of College placements.

Discussion was good. I mean that. I've learned a lot, enjoyed the banter and hopefully some of you have done the same.

I'll answer for #1 fun: Same as the define art vs. porn answer. I know it when I see it.
Which is exactly the answer to #2 - Yes!
Each person's destiny is not pre-determined. Nutrition, training, attitude, all major factors, in development but yes, innate capabilities like balance, agility, speed, aggression, are universally accepted as the "things that can't be coached" and play a major role in one's ultimate athletic achievement.

More importantly, however, both of those points are irrelevant (like you) because they point to talent identification. I never mentioned Talent ID. I specifically called out PLAY and getting all kids involved, especially those that can't afford club soccer. If the population of Americans that PLAY basketball, football, etc. chose to PLAY soccer then the best would emerge. The Talent Identification folks would find them and funnel them to structured programs that hone the innate talent. Familiar model right? Works for B-ball in the US, Baseball in PR and DR, and exactly what happens in Soccer outside the US. Until there is $$ in US Soccer, branded role models, and opportunities for the development channel to get paid, the toughest of the tough won't play.

          As to #3, No, I don't . Please Clarify.
