that is so insulting to the kids that make that list- you make it seem like its a popularity contest ,its not. coaches who put up inferior players get hammered pretty quickly

you may find some of that at the end of the all conf lists, but not at all state

Im pretty sure you dont put players up for all state. Its based on the all conf votes

If a player recvs top votes in conf they automatically become all state

your first team all conf is your all state ballot (i believe the top vote getter in a conf is a lock)

which state wide is around 100 kids- then they fight about that to get to 1st team all state
1st team AS is your all region ballot
all region is your AA ballot

It’s all very subjective. And those who don’t think so are kidding themselves.

It's political and not always representative of the best player on a team. Coaches from teams that aren't great have a tough time getting kids in as well.

Some coaches really just angle for seniors. I can recall a situation where a junior lead the conference in all statistical categories etc. Coach put that kid up as well as his senior captain. He was told that he could get one of them in. That's the subjective aspect.

You’re correct it’s 100% political and in many respects a popularity contest. Most players are goal scorers and defensive players/holding mids, etc have a tough time making it. The list favors statistics, which are unattainable for many positions.

Yes getting in two from the same team is rare; they both need to be outstanding and when it happens it's usually a top GK and a field player

It's more popularity and influence of the coach. In the situation I'm thinking of, the junior player was one of the best in the conference and that played out in the numbers. Coach only had one bullet to use and opted to give the nod to his senior captain. Other coaches with a vote would have never gone that way. One was deserving and the other was a nice kid. That's the political end of it. Happens every year.

To do so when practically none of the teams play each other/coaches won't see players from other parts of the state - that would only stress the politics of it all. Best to leave it alone to give some shred of credibility moving forward. Sucks for the kids who are deserving and had looked forward to a feather in their caps but it's not 8 year old "everyone gets a trophy" travel soccer either.

It can and does. Some coaches go that route (and in that case the argument can be made the junior will get it their senior year), others do nominate the most deserving. No blanket statements overall, but certain coaches do have reputations on how they handle the process.

My problem with that thinking is that it should be performance based.

Look at this year. What if the junior couldn't play due to COVID nonsense or got injured as a senior. You have to reward kids for performance in a given year and not just based on their grade.

Injuries are always a risk. If it's even close to a tie, give it to the senior unless the kid has been a jerk for four years. The gap would have to be pretty significant to nominate someone younger. Plus coaches can nominate more than one. They're just less likely to get 2, but it does happen sometimes.

You act like there's a science to this and there isn't. There's a mix of skill, politics, judgement and salesmanship. It's not a perfect system but most of the picks are very deserving.

It is completely a popularity contest, first the more popular coaches get preference and quantity, and less popular coaches get scraps. Strong players at less popular schools get overlooked for weaker players at more popular schools. Always been that way. Won't change.
