Gee maybe because it's a showcase and kids need to be seen? Or teams want some new competition? Take the usual precautions - masks, hand wash etc + it's all outside. It's not getting people from all over the country, just teams that can drive in the region. Very minimal risk.

If you can't socially distance outdoors at a 110 yard field you have issues. These tournaments are not raves in a basement. This virus will be around for a long time mask up and wash your hands.

Maryland was just added back to the mandatory 14-day quarantine list for NY, NJ and CT. Assuming that stays, anyone travelling back from MD will have to undergo a mandatory 14 day quarantine. That means missing in-person school, not seeing friends, and not going to an office. This is the current mandatory requirement with fines in place for non-compliance. Whether you believe it is necessary is a different aspect, but this is current mandatory requirement for any travel back from that state that would supercede the ability to play sports there.

It is certainly not essential travel. It is not recommended to go (assuming things do not improve), but there is not a mandatory quarantine requirement that is enforced right now.
