Soccer has to compete with the other three sports, true. Soccer only gets the "leftovers" after the "big 3" get the pick of the talent? False. There aren't kids out there who are passionate about soccer and don't care about the other sports (but who are good enough athletes to compete in other sports if they wanted to)? Nonsense.

Most kids just want to fit in by the time they get to middle school, it is just the reality of being a twelve or thirteen year old boy. And if they are athletic, coordinated kids they are going to flock to the big 3. It is what their friends are doing for the most part, and it is still a ticket to popularity in most communities. Plus, they actually get to play with the kids who they go to school with, unlike the mess that is created by club soccer where three kids in the same class can belong to three different clubs. And they don't have to train three to four times a week ten months out of the year, meaning they can play a sport at a high level and also have the time for other activities and/or sports. That isn't to say that there are kids who stick with soccer who couldn't play the big 3, it just means the talent pool is considerably smaller than what might exist in other places. Youth soccer in America is a lot of sacrifice without a lot of rewards.

Soccer has to compete with more than just the 3 mainstream, accepted, desired sports on the boys side. Yes, the overwhelming majority of youth soccer participants are the leftovers from the other sports. It's simply a participation sport in this country anyone can sign up an play without any real acumen for the game. It's awesome it's like playing tag or kick ball it's a recess activity for everybody. Geez, if you just have disposable cash your kid can even travel. None if these related to actual sport skill ability, it's a joke. They aren't kids who are relevant in HS Football, Basketball & Baseball (all league types) that are giving up that sport to play recreational HS Soccer.

Sports are tied to education in this country and it seems you are uneducated.

Total population is entirely different than number of soccer players. At some point, the numbers advantage is no longer enough to be the primary factor in success as every player is at an elite athlete standard. Then the primary driver of success becomes the skills of those elite athletes. This is where the American men struggle.

Skills, hell no... We need top athletes not hyped up little fellas that the coaches favor. (Bald coaches sons turning it over in mid field like a hot potato.)

Curacao's total population is 161,014; that is one hundred and sixty one thousand!!! LOL That is almost as big as Eugene Oregon... Our US team beat them by one and Curacao almost tied them.
Come on man give it a rest, DA is a joke and we need to open the nets back up and take advantage of all the streams that may lead a child to develop for national team. We have the talent as a country we just need a better way to identify and encourage on mens side.

Oh contrary it actually strengthen's the argument, if a state like Oregon, was devoted only to the sport of Soccer (no College/HS/Youth or playground Football, Basketball, Baseball or LAX) guess what this lot would stand a great chance of kicking the butt of the current USA team.

It's not a sport that interests any relevant male athlete or skilled player, besides the one off immigrant kid or a failed football, baseball or basketball players that shines as GK.

US Sporting culture must be changed and that isn't happening.

Boys/Males in the States have American Football & Baseball (women aren't capable of playing with men or even vs themselves yet? ) also tugging at elite male athletes are Basketball, LAX, Hockey, Track n Field, Volleyball, Golf, Tennis & Wrestling.

Bottom line Male Soccer in the states is not the #1 choice for gifted players/sporting athletes, as it is in such countries the size of Oregon with a devotion to Soccer above all else, yes they can beat us and even countries the size of china.

Your understanding of sporting cultural differences is all that is failing.

USA as a whole loves Olympics and World Cups it's easy to pay attention for a week or 2 every 4 years in the summer and root for your country.

Women's soccer has little interest to the sporting public in countries that have made Male Soccer the #1 activity of the country a devotion and passion sometimes eclipsing religion.

Decent 14/15 year old boys wreck the best Women's team on the planet.

Giving women the opportunity to play makes things equal, hopefully the USA can inspire countries that love soccer to give women' a chance to play.

I'm happy, as a citizen, that we won...it'll be awhile before we win again. We won off experience...capitalizing on mistakes made by a young opposition.

Tobin Heath is as creative if not more so then any dutch player. Rose’s goal was exquisite. Rapinoe does not beat anyone with pace at this point - skill, guile is all she has.

USWNT outclassed the Dutch in every way with the possible exception of the Dutch goalkeeper - who kept that result from being much worse.
