Well, we didn't lose the last election. We won the popular vote, and Trump won the electoral college by about 80 votes spread over three states. That is why he is so unpopular - most people did not want him to be president. The last a Republican candidate won the popular vote was 2004. Before that Gore won the popular vote. The last time a Republican won a popular vote PRIOR to GW was 1988 when GW's dad won it. Basically Democrats win the popular vote and Republicans win because they are either handed a victory by the Supreme Court or because they win the electoral college by a slim margin.
