Can someone give me a rundown of all these different leagues? Why so many? What is the difference? Which league is better for what type of player? This was our first year in competitive soccer and I am still SO confused.

The USA League is a step up from recreational soccer leagues. In the USA League the vast majority of teams have poor basic skills and most team rely on playing longball to score. The CDL has regressed the past few years, but still is heads and shoulders better than the USA League. CDL teams will usually have good ball skills and usually have a top tier coach. Many of the USA League teams still have parents coaching competitive teams. The NPL is a top tier league, but is limited to a very few clubs.

The USA League is a step up from recreational soccer leagues. - yes in D3 & D2. Most top premier are above CDL second teams and compete with any elite CDL teams. Varies based on age certainly and coach.

The CDL has regressed the past few years, but still is heads and shoulders better than the USA League. - leagues don't mean much. It's time they merge for the sake of the players.
CDL teams will usually have good ball skills and usually have a top tier coach. Many of the USA League teams still have parents coaching competitive teams. I've seen plenty of parent coaches in both clubs playing in each league. Usually parent coaches drop out at u13 and above.
The NPL is a top tier league, but is limited to a very few clubs. - would be great if this league cleans house, pulls in more top teams u13 above and really what is left is a mixed bag in either league. Key is go watch the individual coach train the team and coach a game. Then decide what is best. Don't show up at tryouts and don't believe the DOC.
If you ca navoid having your kid play in the USA League, then your child will be better off. USA League is like NCAA Division 2 football, alot of bad clubs that have no other place to go. Any club worth their salt is either out of the USA League, or trying to transition their club to leave the USA League.
The USA League is good for young teams, once kids reach the U12 level the USA League begins to deteriorate into a collection of small clubs and usually the 3rd teams from the top clubs.
Bottom of the barrel clubs are in the USA League: Largo, GTBFC, Wesley Chapel, Celtic, Pinellas County, etc. If your in Pinellas County, don't take your kid to any of these clubs, they will not receive good training. Instead, take them to the Chargers, Strictly, WFF or TBU, these clubs all have access to better leagues than the USA League.

Wrong wrong wrong, Strictly? Tell me just 3 age groups that they are good. CDL and NPL are not good because it is club based and they do not have relegation, so you can have some good teams and some 3rd division teams in the same group. USA is the same as far as depth but at least you have a relegation system. Bottom line way to many leagues, which makes them all weak and watered down
