    Ineligible player questions

What are the reasons why a player could be deemed ineligible? How does CiAC find out about ineligible players?

    *************************************

    Girls Soccer Tournament Disqualification

CHESHIRE, Conn. – Due to the use of an ineligible player, Berlin High School has been disqualified from the CIAC Class L Girls Soccer Tournament. Per CIAC by-laws, Joel Barlow High School, Berlin’s first-round opponent, will now play against Daniel Hand High School in a second-round match November 14 at Daniel Hand.

Per CIAC by-laws “when it is discovered that a team has used an ineligible competitor in a CIAC team tournament, the tournament game/match shall be forfeited. The team using the ineligible player will be disqualified from the tournament and that team’s last opponent will advance in its place. Teams eliminated prior to the last opponent will not be permitted to re-enter the tournament.”

Rules are rules. This rule has been in place for over 30 years. Do all think it is right no but is a rule.
Do all think that allowing "170 boys" to play NO. Until people stand up to the rules that are outdated and not conforming nothing will change. Majority of states around the country do not have this rule. Kids are allowed to play. Most states in New England do not have this rule. CIAC should reach out and say hmmmmm guys how does this work for your state nut not ours.

Many don't have an outright ban but there are restrictions, like you cannot miss any of your HS team events (practices or games) and if you can fit club in it's on your own time. Besides, most HS teams don't run during the HS season anyway or greatly reduce their activity. Clubs know it's too much for players too.

The Girls L thread has more deets but basically a Berlin player was either doing ODP or PDP which isn't allowed. This year Pomp boys forfeited two regular season games because a player tried out for a club, also not allowed. Another boys team get bounced from playoffs because a player was doing club. The other reason is academics, which happened to Danbury boys recently. All my recent memories, there are probably others.

How does CIAC find out? School self reports or someone provides them with information.

Some states ban HS players from all club related activities during the school season.

Not many actually. More have rules that you have to make HS your priority and can't miss any practices or games.

I'm not sure how a kid could even have time for Fall club considering all the practices/games these HS programs do. The kid would have zero downtime and I'd think academics would be a major struggle too.

That's exactly why the rule is there - burnout. Clubs generally don't have anything U15+ so kids aren't tempted. Some younger freshman might be able to do U14 but shouldn't. I think the player this time was doing OPD. Also a no no.

If it has to do with Berlin, they probably brought in an out of town kid. They offer them the good ol’ BHS education and if you’re on the football team you can be housed in a condo owned by an assistant coach so parents don’t have to drive back and forth everyday.

Lol that can be another reason for ineligibility but that doesn't seem to be the case here

This is sad and completely stupid by her parents. If it is who I think it is, blame the parent. She’s not old enough to drive herself to training. If the player is in high school or playing DA, follow the damn rules so you don’t put your child in these type of situations.

She's also old enough to know right from wrong and to say no. The entire family is to blame.
