Let's face it, its entirely a cultural thing. We gravitate towards those that are like ourselves, so if you're a black kid, are you going to watch or play baseball where less than 8% of MLB players are black or are you going to gravitate towards basketball and football where 75% and 70% are black respectively.
Latinos will gravitate towards soccer for obvious reasons and baseball where 32% of MLB players are Latino.
And as far as the BEST athletes participating in this sport or that, unless you are unequivovally saying that black athletes are superior to their white and Latino counterparts then just having more black athletes on the soccer field would mean better soccer.
If that were simply the case then why don't the African nations or the Jamaican team enjoy more success??

Again to me its the investment of resources (time and effort), not just looking for a diamond, the chances of finding even 1 world class player in the U.S. seem slim (it's never happened), but finding several of them to propel the U.S. up the FIFA standing seem even more unlikely. The best soccer countries are willing to do so much more than U.S. soccer entities. Better selection, better coaching, better training, and higher quality competition.

Soccer is growing in popularity here. 15 years ago you would of never found mens leagues playing every night of the week. We would have all been getting fat playing softball or basketball. Things are changing for the better. Fields are popping up everywhere. The money needs to get better scholarships need to get better and training from age 19-24 needs to get better. Our youth teams can hang with some of the best known academies in the world. The youth National teams perform well. So we will get there. I have faith.............

They scouted players as young as 5 years old. They watched them for 3-4 years to see how they developed.

Coaches here are always trying to get the best athletes in the hopes that they will become skilled players and often leave more skilled (and talented) smaller and slower kids (often due to relative age effect) off top teams. Big mistake and the result of pursuing the "best athlete" strategy is USMNT.
