    Collapse/Repurpose of Pro Academies

Chicago Fire - took an age group off last year; future is murky
Earthquakes girls program - killed via email
FC Dallas - girls moving (back) to ECNL; boys too, but details (i.e b team) unclear
Galaxy girls program - hearing also killed
NC Courage - moving to ECNL
Reign - having a difficult time finding a league
    Thorns - ditto
Younger (pre-hs) Boys Teams - future of MLS Academies unclear at these ages

Has the hopes that professional run girls' program as a game changer been completely shattered in this country?

Maybe hope remains for boys, but the landscape sure has shifted/regressed/evolved.

It was a bad idea and poorly implemented. Glad they had the guts to put the pin to the balloon.

A professionally run girls academy that actually is run like a real academy (training is subsidized, like boys' academies around the world) would indeed be a game-changer.

Quakes and Galaxy running girls' programs makes little sense from a pro development point of view; neither club has an NWSL team. (Houston, Portland, SLC, and Orlando are the four clubs that operate both an MLS and NWSL team).

But barring that, there's no real reason for a NWSL-badged youth club to be better or worse than anything else. Simply putting on the patch makes no difference; the difference is the investment.

Sure, but Quakes and Gals offered a kind of hope - Gals was essentially outside of pay-to-play, Quakes had some really good teams.

Forgot Dash, which right now seems to be excluded from ECNL. Dawns on me that list doesn't reflect NWSL orgs that dropped their DA the program the year before (thought it was more than 1, KC, Boston Breakers, Orlando, actually hard to keep track).

When the story is written about these few years, "professionally-backed" has turned out to be some of the least stable organizations in girls' soccer. Wouldn't have predicted that a couple of years ago.

Why would these “professionally” run “clubs” have been run any better? The GDA was born out of arrogance and a failure to understand youth soccer and girls soccer in particular.
