A very good insightful article that details what it's like at big time sport schools. This story will not be applicable to any soccer athletes and most athletes in general.

Speak for your own kid. Except for the billboards and big time marketing stuff, it pretty much nailed my kid's world.

Soccer players don't get the glory or attention, but they do have the 5am wake up calls, injuries, jam packed schedules and little time for any kind of life outside of the team. They also get pushed to degrees that are more amenable to team participation and frankly some majors are not conducive for D1 athletes. Internships and study abroad are also virtually impossible to do.

College soccer players are wasting their time and diminishing the value of their college years.

Yes. They should play intramurals and call it a day. They should do rec youth soccer also and walk onto college rosters.

What extra curricular activities would enhance the value?

You are confusing this with D3 soccer. My kid gets paid to play soccer for their school.

                    Research

                    Internships

                    Study abroad

Being able to take a challenging, labor intensive major

College soccer players are basically just going to an expensive sleep away soccer camp.

Pretty simple equation actually, leverage an ability to play soccer into so level of education. Smart families know what their kid is getting into and prepare accordingly. Those parents don't let their kid get thrown on a dummy track like the kid in the article and prep their kid to take full advantage of all of the academic resources made available to get the highest possible education. If you produce out on the soccer field and in the tutor room things will work out just fine.

Can you imagine wanting to be an engineer, going to Purdue (one of the top engineering programs in the country), and not doing your preferred major?

That's part of the trade offs. Most college coaches will tell kids with ambitious majors that there is 3 parts to their college life - soccer, academics and social - and that if they want that ambitious major they will support them but it will mean completely sacrificing their social life. There are plenty of D1 athletes that make that decision that end up in medical schools, engineering schools, law schools etc.

My daughter gets a 50% scholarship for soccer, a 25% merit scholarship, & I get an affordable tuition. She is in a very difficult science major & consistently on Dean’s list. She works hard, has been a starter since freshman year, & is happier than I have ever seen her. So best decision she has ever made was accepting a D1 soccer scholarship to a great school & playing a game she loves. You are a jealous bafoon!
