What will player placement look like?

A lot of clubs are announcing their player placement plans for the 2020-2021 season, but what do those plans look like for new players coming into the club? It seems near impossible for a ECNL team to pick a girl without seeing her play. At this point, it seems like whoever writes the best email will be given the spot. Anyone know what this will look like?

I would guess that most ECNL teams in the area generally know ECNL players from other clubs, and by the registration process will ask for soccer resume (e.g., ECNL, ODP, EPD, id, etc.). They will add known talent on that basis. As for players new players to the area, or players not well known by other clubs... your guess is as good as mine

The ECNL girls coaches (at least the older ages) already know the names\clubs of any girls they are interested in. Sorry emails are not going to work. However, there should be a good chance of getting on an RCL B/C team then getting know at the club and hopefully move up next year.

This virtual tryout process creates an opportunity for both total chaos and relatively informed decision making for both clubs and players. For the first time in forever, clubs are not having simultaneous in person tryouts that effectively prevent most people from considering options. Instead, at no cost, anyone can express interest in as many clubs as they want, talk to coaches before making a decision, and decide based on the opportunities available.

You have to know that they will create rules to hinder this. Probably will be required to accept or reject current club's offer before other clubs are even permitted to offer, or something like that. There is a reason that tryouts must be held the same days and I don't see the clubs cedeing control so easily.

I can see that but these are unusual times. Some families won't be able to afford soccer going forward and clubs are going to want all the fees they can get. If you aren't happy with your child's placement, just tell the club you need to explore your options. Families do this even when the economy is not in collapse. Be polite, be considerate, but look out for your kid.

This is what SU are doing:

Episode Five of The Jimmy and Kyle Show is out NOW!

              Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKKPJVLBdho&t=749s

Join Jimmy and Kyle this week as they discuss one of the most discussed topics in youth soccer in the state - how Player Placement will work in lieu of tryouts this year. The guys will explain everything you need to know about the process, what to expect, and what steps families need to take now, and once placements are made!

As always, this week’s episode will be available on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

This is how it has always worked for players already known to the coaches at every club, minus the physical tryouts. Maybe they should just do it this way going forward and save everyone time.

Players on ECNL teams that displaced Reign players might want to join should ask their coach straight up if they're going to be retaining their spot so they can plan accordingly.

Great that SU has created this format to keep parents informed.

Same with the Copa players who could get displaced by the ECNL players, etc. In most of the ECNL age groups there are probably half a team or more of Reign players who would displace current ECNL players, and in some ages more than that. If Reign has a viable program and they lose a few players per age group the disruption is pretty minimal, but scattering 30-40 players between SU, Eastside, Pac would be a mess.

Placement will be for a spot on your club and not a team per se.

Also dont think for one second that all the RCL heads didnt get together and come up with a plan to help each other out as a whole to make sure everything didnt crumble.

When did coaching youth soccer become a full time job for some?

I can assure you players will get displaced at all ages. From what I have been told RR will recruit and sell anybody at the expense of anybody. He has been waiting for this moment to get back at Reign. I would just say be careful what you ask for. So far the verdict is still out on what he has done with the girls program. Their standings do not look very formidable to the other local clubs. And yes I am a former parent from SU.

My dd is a high level player in ECNL. We know all of the high level girls in ECNL and Reign in our age group. We have known these girls since U11 pre-GDA and the list has changed, but you have your core group. Coaches have a much better view of talent than we do, but if we know which girls are coming in at any club, we have a pretty good idea who will be cut.

The parents who were never really part of this group are the ones freaking out b/c they do not really have a strong gauge of each player. Some of the Reign and ECNL are figuring out where their dd will play the most and have an impact. There are no real strangers here after years of playing with them, like a dysfunctional extended family. Family Reunion Time! :)

Right now clubs aren't worried about the bring in quality, that is just a bonus. They are worried about the quantity of players that are coming in. There is a whole lot of coaches that need to be retained that do this full time. How we ever got to the point of coaching youth soccer full time is another story.
