A VERY small number of college players will make soccer their career. College is about getting an education that is going to prepare you for life after soccer. For many MA D1 players soccer is over after their freshman year. At a D1 level playing four years is the exception. Even at D3 playing four years is a 50/50 shot.

While there are a lot of D3 schools that do not offer strong soccer programs, per the previous post, the top 50-100 D3 programs are very strong and as stated would be competitive against the bottom half of D1 soccer programs.

At the end of the day, it becomes quite simple. Very few kids will ever play pro, and even fewer of those will even play in college. Ultimately, for 95% of the kids playing college soccer, it is all about the education while playing a sport you love. The difference between D1 and D3 is largely in the commitment required as D1 tends to be a full year program, whereas D3 scales if back in the winter and spring. This gives the kids more flexibility to study what they want and to more fully enjoy all aspects of the college experience.
Poster you responded to is jealous his kid didn't have the academics to get into Chicago or Tufts or Rochester. But I'm sure playing 2 years at Eastern Illinois was great.

Oh, right, sorry. I am sure that the poster is jealous about Rochester NY (enough said), Somerville, MA (why go to Tufts when you can assuredly go to Harvard), and the-nearly-better-than-it's-D1-neighbors-in-academics U Chicago. By the way, Eastern Illinois is a fine school. Horses for courses, my erudite friend.

Yep, sorry, my bad, got it backwards. Overall point of the message still stands. By far and away, college soccer is predominately the chance to do something you love while working to get a great education. That educational experience can often be better in a D3 environment as opposed to D1.

At the end of the day, we should be happy for all these kids. Great accomplishment regardless of D1, 2 or 3, and a great experience and opportunity for all.

yeah for the serious students, soccer should be second priority to getting an education. D3 and Ivy (to a lesser extent) help facilitate that. If it's all about soccer (which is what the highly competitive D1s soccer schools are about) then education takes 2nd place.
