Not looking for a debate nor do I want to discuss D1vsD3. Looking for those with experience either way to share whatever they can share. I would like to believe there are some on this board who search through the idiocy for some real value. Unfortunately, these are not topics you can easily discuss with parents in your own soccer circles. My wife and I keep our mouths shut.

Um...don't need to know the schools. start at a match, you idiot.

OP, forget it. I was naive enough to think the aholes might steer clear. Lesson learned. And, no, I wasn't relying on TS for guidance. Just hopeful that we might hear from others who faced these options.

You go to the best school you can where you have a reasonable shot at playing soccer...if the kid really wants to play soccer. Or, if you think your kid is going to be overmatched academically you pick the best one you can where you feel like she or he won't be too overmatched. Why would anyone go anywhere where they know there is little chance they are going to play going into it?

If you think she will be able to handle the academics, go for the academic reach, as it will probably give her a career both. I would avoid a soccer reach unless your kid is happy sitting on the bench.

              Meant "career boost"

My kid had a similar decision. She had offers from academic schools, but wasn't an academic type first. She chose the soccer reach, which is not easy. She has learned D1 sports are a job. She has played, but not as much as she would have liked, and without the accolades she would have gotten elsewhere. When I ask her now, she is pleased with her choice and, after talking to friends at top academic institutions, realizes the tougher workload would have buried her.

Another thing to look into is how much support the school gives athletes. Some go out of their way to make sure players are supported, in the right classes, have academic and athletic advisors, etc.. Some schools don't go the extra mile. In the former instance a kid might be able to do just fine in an academic reach school, but not in the later if he/she is already in over their head.

What does "best school" even mean? Absolutely THE worst advice routinely given on TS is to pick a school based upon its academic reputation. That advice is stupidly naïve and short sighted. First off, you should let your child do the picking and then encourage them to pick a school based upon the overall fit which includes a heck of a lot more than just the wow factor the school's name has. If your kid is a potential athletic scholarship candidate then what you are talking about is the equivalent of them taking on a full time job in addition to being a student. They had better factor in the playing situation and player life style heavily into their equation if you want them to be happy and end up graduating from the school they choose. Because of the commitment involved, reaching for either soccer or academics is just plain foolish. No kid is going to be happy to riding the bench and if your child is what is known as an academic concession they will get shunted on to the "dummy track" and end up with a watered down degree in the easiest major at the school. That is not what most parents really want for their kids. When it comes to being a athlete/student, being a big fish in a small pond is the way to go. The simple truth is your child will get the most amount of assistance (financial and academic) at a school where they are at the top end of both the admissions pool and recruit pool. Help them find the place where those elements are in balance.

STFU, BTDT. The "best school" is whatever that kid and that family believe is the best school for them, whatever their criteria are. That doesn't always mean the highest "ranked." Each family has a sense of what would be "best" for their kid. For instance, I would pick Haverford or Carleton over Williams over Amherst. And if the soccer works out even better then that's even better.

Can't go wrong with any Ivy League school. The best educations and solid soccer programs for the most part

Idiots like this clown have no idea what college soccer is all about so of course they'll pick their kid's college based upon the wow factor.
