And it helps to have a contact on the paper. In south florida there is a club coach that writes for either the palm beach post or sun sentinel. His players miraculously always make the first, second, and honorable mentions, even when they have lower stats than other players. Their pictures are in the paper every week. It is always who you know.

The newspaper reporters are off covering basketball until the district playoffs begin and may see them at a few final playoff games. By the end of the season our best players were often on crutches and no pictures in the paper for them.

Most people get what it is. Think about the statistics. Some high schools have a difficult strength of schedule, while others have bogus games. A player could rack up 8 goals in a lame game and they look like a scoring machine with stats. Our coach sits the top scorers in easy games to give others a chance off the bench to score goals. Also, can never compare 1A to 4A or 5A type games and players, or try to compare the goals of a forward to a midfielder/defender. Forwards get the glory, especially the ones who rack up the goals in 1A.

LOL. Actually my kids in the paper plenty. No complaints. But do a little research and you'll see what I mean. The entire season, same players identified and talked about. At the end of the season, their stats were equal to or less than many other players. Congrats to them. It never hurts to know someone. Just making an observation for the conversation.

That may be true singularly, but not in total. There were some HS that did well but did not win districts.

Like Any Award......

It most certainly is who you know, who knows you and finally what you do is last on the list.

I would say most of these kids are deserving but the ranking 1st, 2nd team district, all area and so forth is a joke.

I scratch your back you scratch mine is definitely in effect. The players are voted in by coaches who might change the player's position if they think they have a better chance to get in on the first ballot. Many of the players have never played the position listed below. Ha !

Teams with better records get more publicity yet it does not mean that all their players are better by any means. Many times they just had more overall talent on the team. It is much more difficult to get recognition when good players are on bad teams.

You also have some good players who decided not to play high school due to DA or ECNL commitments who do not appear on any list.

The Sentinel told me they would probably not publish the list this year. I wonder why...
They have published it for as long as I can remember.
