Even now, Sweden's death toll is better than that of the UK, Belgium, Spain, and Italy, all of which have enacted draconian lockdowns. In fact, the Swedish model looks increasingly prescient as time goes on. While the rest of Europe is talking about surges in cases and new lockdowns, the number of Swedish case continues to decline, while total ICU hospitalizations have plummeted. Meanwhile, Sweden was the only "the only major economy to grow in the first quarter of the year" while most of Europe was in economic disarray.
What exactly isn't open that you think is destroying the economy? Bars? Nightclubs? Movie theaters? I dont think there is a lockdown. I think most people are choosing to stay at home. There just aren't enough of the idiotic crowd who downplay the seriousness of the virus, refuse to wear masks, and make up "alternative facts" about the virus to make life seem normal again... But... They think this is about Trump...LMFAO..

        People did die pre covid.

Average daily deaths in US pre corona virus. "An average of 7,708 deaths occurred each day. January, February, and December were the months with the highest average daily number of deaths (8,478, 8,351, and 8,344, respectively). June, July, and August were the months with the lowest average daily number of deaths (7,298, 7,157, and 7,158, respectively)."

Come on Florida you can get to 10,000 new cases daily with 400 dead pretty easy. Tomorrow you will break the 500,000 case mark for sure, and will be over 7500. Heck, by this time next week we could easily be at 10,000 Floridians dead from covid.

I assume Florida is shooting for 1,000,000 cases by election day with 40,000 dead. I mean heck, right now the country is sitting at 160,000 dead -- that's more than were killed in every American military action, of any type of nature, since the end of WWII. So, add together Vietnam dead, Korea dead, Middle East dead, and everything else, and you are no where near the number of Americans who have died from covid just since February of this year.

Why are you comparing combat casualties to virus deaths? Why did you not include WWI and WWII in your stupid analogy? You're sick individual. Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Desantis using the Sweden strategy and hopefully this will behind us in a few more weeks.

You can’t stop the virus from spreading, only delay the inevitable peak and recession. We will be done when it starts to move into the Midwest in next few weeks.
I am a liberal democrat, but agree. Lockdowns defer the achievement of herd immunity. Here, the requisite population to confer effective herd immunity might be as low as 20%. This is why areas of even NYC are unlikely to see a resurgence of cases when things open up further there. So if you lock down, but lack a vaccine on the other side of lockdown, you've only lost a lot of money without saving lives over the long run and deferred the time at which you get herd immunity. The key is managing the exposure, which is challenging. But yes, unless you think effective vaccines will be broadly available in the next nine to twelve months, which seems highly unlikely, the DeSantis strategy is sound.

Ummmm....the entire country was lock downed for 2 months. Parts still are in lock down. California and New York are very far from where Florida is right now.

Libs want everything to licked down right now.

At this point....best long term strategy is herd immunity. No one ever said we had to be sure no one dies of the virus. The idea was to flatten the curve. That has already been accomplished.

The point is, most places are now open... So what is your issue exactly? Or do I need to wait until Trump tells you?

That is simply dumb. How do you achieve herd immunity with 20%.. Please post your source. There is no logic in what you just posted.

You should read more. It’s been widely speculated by scientists studying the virus that T cells play a huge role in immunity and we are not testing for a T cell response, so we are potentially greatly underestimating the actual number of infections.

Places that have as low as a calculated 20% infection level of the population (Sweden, and even New York) are showing sign of being close to herd immunity. It’s many experts speculation based on the actual data.

Every time I wonder how on earth the US could elect the worst leader in history, one of you idiots speaks up to remind that you make up 34% of the population.

Read a book. Watch news. Do something to educate yourself beyond a 3rd grade level.
Ever hear of tuberculosis? Contagious via contact and air. 1.5 million died from it in 2019 alone. And that's with a vaccine and drug treatment. Ongoing infectious disease for decades.

Where is the shutdown? Go watch some more news. You're doing wonderful with that education.

Because in the US only around 500 dies in a year. It is more in those ****hole countries like our great leader calls them. Nobody cares for them.

TB is a disease that afflicts mostly underdeveloped countries and regions. Over the last 10 years in the US there is usually an average of 10,000 cases of TB per year and 500 to 600 deaths. While you are correct in stating that there is a vaccine for TB, that vaccine is rarely, if ever, used in the US. Nice correlation, bright boy.

To get a guesstimate of what is required to achieve herd immunity, the Ro of a disease need to be looked at. At the current Ro of covid, approximately 70ish% of the population would need to be infected or vaccinated. The population of Sweden is about 10.2 million. That means 7.1ish million need to be infected or vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. Even at you paltry number of 20% there would need to be over 2 million infected or vaccinated. Sweden has had a bit under 82,000 cases of Covid. They're nowhere close to achieving herd immunity.
