This is an issue facing many schools. As budgets are squeezed some may have to reprioitize how much they're spending on athletics. Top Basketball and football programs at big schools are one thing. Smaller schools and weaker conferences dont get the big $

If UConn is losing 3 mill a year on women’s basketball, they’re irresponsible. No reason whatsoever to spend more than they take in. This is going to and should fall on the AD. UConn needs to get back into the Big East for all sports except football, then go independent in football with a limited budget.

Despite UCONN being the #1 team, there just isn't much money in women's bball. Imagine how much a lower ranked team that never gets any TV coverage is losing? Totally agree on the change up however. That's a lot of money to be losing and it's not something non-athletes struggling to pay tuition appreciate. Top men's football and basketball are really the only money makers. A school like Alabama can make enough from football to cover all the other sports. UCONN? Not so much.

UConn women get some TV money and draw well. The point is that they are spending way more than they should. No need for it. The program could be and should be a money maker. They’re wasting money.

On what? Their team buses? It's not like UCONN has built a shiny new facility or anything for them. Yes they get some TV money but it pales in comparison to men's sports. Women's basketball doesn't bring in the numbers and that is what drives college sports coverage.

UCONN has one team that gets on national, prime time tv. Even if they are a little behind in the rent, you have to recognize that this is a tremendous benefit for the entire school (and state) and you don't get to add those goodwill dollars on to affect the bottom line .... even though it really really does .... lots of free press for the school in states they would otherwise have to way to reach.

                  1. Travel expenses. Conference and out of conference adds up. Especially in AAC and out of conference they play a national schedule
                  2. Staff expenses. Geno and crew make a lot of money. Deservedly so.
                  3. Field house expenses
                  4. Recruiting expenses. They recruit nationally

Those expenses with limited TV money and you get a loss on P&L statemen

Agree, my kid went there because the women’s basketball program is great.....said no one

Ct democrats should be embarrassed by directing excessive funds (tax dollars) for sports teams. 98 percent of the state taxpayers have never set foot on campus to watch any UConn sport.

Yes they should pull all things high profile so no one sees the school. Get rid of the medical and business schools too. Then it can go back to the mediocre University it was in the 70s and 80s and fall of the national map.

They’re clearly overspending. Lots of schools recruit nationally. Doesn’t require millions of dollars. Travel is more bc of the conference for sure. And it’s great to play a national schedule if you can afford it, which they clearly cannot. Sorry, Geno. You win titles but lose money. Play regionally. They don’t NEED those expenses. It’s irresponsible.

It’s mediocre now, Sparky. And falling fast. Their sports teams are lousy with a few exceptions and those sports lose money so what’s the point? Malloy should take over UConn and finish running it into the ground.

Ummm. Genos salary is $2.4 million. He’s worth it. That’s a big chunk of the expenses.

UConn women’s team is the Best publicity for Connecticut

Play regionally? AAC territory goes into Oklahoma and TExas

Explain how losing 3 mill a year is worth it? LOL. Democratic math no doubt. Not ONE single student goes to UConn for women’s basketball that isn’t on the team. And all those players are on full rides so they don’t bring in money either. Here’s the point dummy, when you are spending more than you take in, they’re not worth it. See how that works? If the team was 150 in the country but the coach was making 200K a year, and they played in region for out of conference games, even with lower ticket sales they’d be better off.

UConn should chop Geno’s salary in half, tighten the budget across the board, dump the football program and enter a better conference for every other sport. Problem solved. If you’re losing money in football and basketball, especially when one of your basketball teams is number 1 in the country, the AD should be fired immediately. And I’m going to guess this one will be very soon.

How much must football lose for the school? Football has far, far more scholarships and expenses + poor performance in a poor conference means few TV$. For the life of me I don' understand the number of coaches football teams have now. Sure Gino has a high salary but the costs of running a basketball team are much lower than football. He would easily get scooped up by another program if you slashed his salary and then what? Women's basketball in general isn't a big draw but at least having a top team helps.

The problem schools face is not just the dollars and cents of teams (at most schools the numbers alone make no sense at all) but what impact having teams have on the overall school experience. Imagine having nothing to do in boring Storrs? Athletics also bring in alumni dollars but it's difficult to quantify (since most donations go into general funds, not athletic specific).
