That's a lot of money to be losing and it's not something non-athletes struggling to pay tuition appreciate. Top men's football and basketball are really the only money makers. A school like Alabama can make enough from football to cover all the other sports. UCONN? Not so much.

2. Staff expenses. Geno and crew make a lot of money. Deservedly so.
3. Field house expenses
4. Recruiting expenses. They recruit nationally
Those expenses with limited TV money and you get a loss on P&L statemen

Ct democrats should be embarrassed by directing excessive funds (tax dollars) for sports teams. 98 percent of the state taxpayers have never set foot on campus to watch any UConn sport.

And it’s great to play a national schedule if you can afford it, which they clearly cannot. Sorry, Geno. You win titles but lose money. Play regionally. They don’t NEED those expenses. It’s irresponsible.
UConn women’s team is the Best publicity for Connecticut
Play regionally? AAC territory goes into Oklahoma and TExas

UConn should chop Geno’s salary in half, tighten the budget across the board, dump the football program and enter a better conference for every other sport. Problem solved. If you’re losing money in football and basketball, especially when one of your basketball teams is number 1 in the country, the AD should be fired immediately. And I’m going to guess this one will be very soon.

Here’s the point dummy, when you are spending more than you take in, they’re not worth it. See how that works? If the team was 150 in the country but the coach was making 200K a year, and they played in region for out of conference games, even with lower ticket sales they’d be better off.

The problem schools face is not just the dollars and cents of teams (at most schools the numbers alone make no sense at all) but what impact having teams have on the overall school experience. Imagine having nothing to do in boring Storrs? Athletics also bring in alumni dollars but it's difficult to quantify (since most donations go into general funds, not athletic specific).
