Default Girls SURF review....

Hey have an 08 daughter and new to this. She plays on a town team now and a fellow parent talked about SURF. His information was second hand but spoke highly of them. After browsing here, it is hard to filter out the BS to get a read on the group, because all of the threads here tell you that all groups, academies and town teams suck.....
So if anyone out there is actually associated or has child play for SURF, could them please give me some feedback... Thanks

If you're 08 then next year you'd be playing for Surf's team which I believe plays in EDP and NPL. They tend to hold a fairly large roster and then assign games to the kids for the weekend. I think maybe the bulk of the top kids would play EDP more often but might depend on matchup on a weekly basis. I think they do a good job with coaching but their talent is not the same as the top teams on LI like SUSA or Albertson because they don't have an ECNL or DA league to play in once you're past U12.

Question to ask yourself, is your daughter at the top of her town team? If so, it makes sense to try out at some clubs like SUSA, Surf, Albertson, EMSC. If not, stay with town anotehr year or two and do extra training and make the jump at U13 or U14.

The problem with Surf is that they are all over the place and constantly shifting directions which at this point has them with no developmental partners in which to generate new teams from, have no home fields in which to call their own and their woman's semi-pro team has folded.

They started off in Westchester but within a month of announcing their creation, SUSA bought ISA (which led to the end of the ISA/KK partnership) and in that chaos Surf attempted to move into Long Island to scoop up as many of those teams as possible. All their troubles can be traced to that decision.

As a result they tried running programs in Westchester and Stony Brook at the same time while having no established infrastructure to handle it. They threw some money around in recruiting some college coaches, creating that adult woman's team and announcing that they were going to run some major tournaments. But for all their grand plans they only managed to convince a couple of ISA teams to make the jump to Surf/Stony Brook, their tournaments were cancelled and the college coaches have proven to be far more show than go. Stony Brook has since moved on to partner with KK instead of Surf so they have no pipeline of younger players in which to draw from. In short, it's a dying program.

to the OP - get your kid to some practices at local clubs now. Don't wait for tryouts. You'll quickly see who has the better coaching and talent and whether or not it's a good fit for your player. Don't rely on Talking Soccer for much accurate information (although it is true Surf has been all over the map, that is well documented).

If you run through their schedule this year they use home fields in Stony Brook, Brentwood, multiple Farmingdale locations and Oyster Bay. All of which are rented on a per game basis and none of which they will be guaranteed to have access to next season.

Their current teams are competitive, I'll give them that. I just don't see it lasting now that the original founders and main money guy are out and they no longer have a partnership with the Stony Brook program in which to draw players from.
