    High School Soccer

I know there are a lot of soccer snobs on here that are constantly bashing high school soccer. But I had a great time watching an entertaining game today in Madison, CT. It was the Hand-Guilford match up and the score ended up 0-0. Despite there not being any goals it was a game with many opportunities. Both teams played well. Both teams tried to possess the ball and they played lots of intricate, quick passes to teammates. It was great to see two rivals playing on a beautiful night in front of a good sized crowd. The two young coaches should both be proud. Well done Hand and well done Guilford.

Soccer snob? You mean those who like good soccer and not kick, chase, and foul?

Exactly! This game was beautiful to watch. Controlled passing, possession and competitive game. Two great young coaches who have high expectations for their players to play the beautiful game. Well done boys! Fun game to watch. Kids played hard and it was a great community event.

That does not exist in the majority of the state. Glad you had a good time bc that is what it should be about. I think it all starts with quality coaching.

Direct, fast paced, high press soccer wins HS championships - just ask the Ridgefield coach. He knows the formula for success.

Hand had plenty of success playing the same style under the same coach last year, so I would say that their style can win championships also...

Unfortunately, many on this site are soccer experts (after watching Barcelona a few times) and only want to see the "beautiful" game played (possession, precision passing, high technical acumen). High school coaches don't have time to develop these attributes and many realize it is a waste of time to do so. As winning is the objective, a more direct (kick and chase like mad) strategy is far more successful.

I agree HS coaches don’t try to develop possession, precision passing, high technical acumen. They really don’t have the time or expertise. However what does the HS coach do when they have many good club players on their roster? I see many continue to play direct (kick and chase like mad). They refuse to change the style of play. Why? Fear of losing? HS coach’s don’t have time to develop players but some get really good club players capable of playing a nice possession style of play and under utilize them. That is a shame.

You get a team with a couple of kids that know how to play possession, have foot skills etc. The rest of the kids freak out when the ball comes to them which results in them just kicking it up the field. You cant change that in an 8 week season. It all stems from the youth programs. Decent youth coaches and you may have a shot at winning in high school.

Once the season starts it's 2-3 games a week, leaving little time to work on things in practices. Like you said most will get a few players who are good, some who played the game a little (travel) and the rest good athletes. The window is too short to do much. Add in some injuries and coach is just trying to slog it out until playoffs.

Our school and most of our opponents are loaded with premier players. Here's a newsflash for you they can't (or won't) play possession either. Go watch OW play ..... They do it in the back third all day where they have numbers and then force everything through the midfield and beyond. Don't blame HS when nearly every level of team in this state is the same ..... Go check out a men's or women's college aoccer game (any school). They only do it in back third or against extremely weak opponents if they do it at all. Yeah, we all know, your kids HS and club team are the outliers .... Because your kid can play possession soccer all day long .... Without any help.
