She began intense, soccer-specific training when she was 7 years old, started home schooling as a fifth grader to free her schedule for more soccer, and eventually became the first girl to play for a boys’ club team in the United States Development Academy system. She was 10 when she began attending college showcase camps, and at 11 she accepted a full scholarship offer from North Carolina"

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostExactly. One kid does not a trend make. If more girls wanted to go that route (training abroad) they'd be doing it. Instead the nation's top players are still almost all playing in college. MPS went pro (turned down a full ride at UCLA) and it isn't going well for her. Just read below from the article. Even if she is that good (haven't seen her play) this is a commitment she and her family have made. Many would question the decision for someone so young. Add to it that a pro career in women's soccer is nowhere near what it is in men's, even from a sponsorship standpoint.

What exactly is Nikes angle with this? Does she make us want to buy Nike's just like her? Is this story is a bit frightening and off putting or is that just need?

Not sure of the correlation between basketball shoes and soccer cleats, but nice try anyway...
