    SRI-RI Development Academy

This new spin on ODP is laughable. RI just doesn't have the pool of players. It is more of a pyramid scam then development pyramid.

Wow! My kid can be one step away from the National Team by making the Region 1 team? She must be so much better than the mid level NEP team she plays for. What do THOSE coaches know. WNT, here she comes!

Making the Region 1 pool is a huge accomplishment for any youth player. Those who put it down simply didn’t make the cut.

Maybe not WNT, but those RI boys and girls who made Region 1 teams in the past 5-10 years all ended up playing at D1 college programs.

Not anymore is isn't. Maybe 5-6 years ago or more. Keep shelling out the cash and believing. Not putting anyone down, just stating facts now.

They said ODP was useless 5-6 years ago, too. And 5-6 years before that. And it came from the parents of the kids who didn’t make Region 1. Not putting anyone down. Just stating facts.

I know many players who have gone to region 1 camp and they can't even make their clubs NPL team, nevermind ECNL or DA. Those are the best of the region? Really.

Going to the region 1 camp and making the region 1 pool are very different, sir. Anyone can sign up and go to the region 1 camp. Making the region 1 pool and being invited to National ODP camp is very difficult.

So you are making Region 1 Pool, you are beating out the "anybody can sign up and go" group.

You just made my point. Sir....

You don’t know what you’re talking about. There are hundreds of players at the region 1 camp from 16 states. You have to be better than all but 30 or so and overcome biases toward bigger states, coaches who don’t know you, being in different groups of players who you have never played with.

If you’re so sure it’s easy, have your kid go through the 2-a-days with the pool posting every night. It’s a pressure cooker. See how your kid does. The players that make the pool have to be very good. Testament to that is that most of the RI boys and girls who have made it in the past 10 years have gone on to play D1 soccer.

And btw, only in RI can anyone from ODP just pay and go. In other states ODP programs, they select the top players to attend Region 1 Camp. Much harder to just get there. Then beating out the hundreds of players to make the R1 pool (or East region as it’s now called) is very competitive, and talent very strong. It would help if RI would send coaches for all age groups though, because the state coaches do “lobby” the East Region coaches for their players, which is a part of it, but RI ODP has let some of their kids be hung out dry without representation, which sucks.

So does your kid play ECNL or DA? Or comparable level for boys?

I think the best path to YNT is through certain MLS teams that have pull with YNT coaches - if you think your child has that potential.

That said, the ODP coaching in RI has been quite strong - no yellers, knowledgeable and encouraging coaches. Similar to what I have seen at the youth academy in Spain with a team called Real Madrid.

The players that make the pool may have to be supported (advocated for) by RI ODP. You said yourself, "hundreds of players...from 16 states". Unless the player is flat out great someone is going to bat for them. Sorry, nightly pool posting has a political side. They very well may be worthy of the honor but they didn't necessarily get there on their own. There is enough talent from PA and NY to fill a region team. Congratulations if your child made it, still a great accomplishment.
