Stupid Bostonians/M*******s if you think MLS owes you a franchise!
You're right, no one does. One thing MLS could do is now insist the Revs have a stadium in exchange for letting Kraft keep the franchise.

My understanding is the Krafts have wanted to build the stadium for years, but the governor, Boston mayor, and the unions have turned it into a political futball (pun intended). Krafts have said they want it in Foxborough since they own the land, but everyone else wants it in Boston or Worcester in the name of “economic development” (otherwise known as lining someone’s pockets). Hardest thing to build is a stadium.

This is what they went through in Nashville to get a stadium and nearly everyone wanted the MLS franchise and the “fairgrounds” they mention in the article is a really depressed area. Nashville’s fairgrounds would make Suffolk Downs look like a paradise. Imagine the fight you would have in the Boston area trying to build a new stadium!

Kraft wants to squeeze more money out of the state. Given the mess that GE has turned into I think the state is right to be reticent in putting in big $. Big development deals often never deliver on economic promises, jobs or supposed revitalization of crappy areas.

Can you blame him if they force him to build outside Foxborough? The Krafts own tons of land there beyond what already built on. Read up on it, Baker and Walsh seem to have a lot to say on where it should go and if they want a say, then I would make them pay too.

If the state is putting in substantive $, even upgrading public transportation then they should have a say on where it goes. Their interest is bang for the buck for the public good, not what is good for Kraft's already overflowing pickets. If MLs start really pressing Kraft to build he might not have a choice to build - either paying more out of his own pocket to build in Foxboro or get more $ from the state to build elsewhere. Land almost always appreciates in value. He can hold on to that land longer and turn a nice profit.

I don't care who owns the Revs. Playing style/quality aside, the issue is the stadium. Watching/playing soccer on turf in an empty cavernous egg in the middle of the woods is bad packaging. Feels like high school.

That's because it is equivalent to HS in the grand scheme of soccer. I would call it Single A ball, but, it really isn't even that high in the world in terms of soccer leagues around the globe.

Usually when these things go sideways, is when politicians get involved in business decisions. The Krafts own the franchise and to date I’m not sure any public funds have been used. They would prefer to build in Foxborough where he owns the land and there is already a complex, parking, Patriots Place, etc. There would be an immediate return to him given that MLS is still a young franchise so why put it on shaky financial ground with expensive, debt-loaded new stadiums in an expensive place like Boston?

As for “public good”, at the politicians prompting Kraft DID spend money out of his own pocket to look and design a stadium in Dorchester (in the Pope John Paul park area). Arguably, Kraft thought that Dorchester could use the economic shot in the arm and that area was close to I-93 so there was good accessibility, etc. etc. Then the politicians blocked that idea and were trying to get hm to build in much more expensive areas in Allston (the old railroad yard) which presents all kinds of logistical issues that tripled the cost. Kraft wisely didn’t pursue that. So I ask you what “public good” are the politicians trying to accomplish - screwing Dorchester and building up downtown Boston that doesn’t need a stadium?

He can always say he will put it in Hartford and make them cave. CT is a real sucker and could be fooled twice.

Sorry, after we built the new AA Yard Goats stadium in downtown there are no uninhabited blighted properties left to build another stadium and our democratic leaders will fight to the death to protect the inhabited blighted properties to make sure all of our crack dealers and prostitutes have a warm, dry place to live on our dime. Our new governor, Ned Lamont, will probably have to add an additional 30 tolls to make those into penthouses for these people who do society no good. I probably shouldn't have mentioned the prostitutes .... now it may be much more appealing for Kraft to relocate here. Does foxboro have any?
