If Timbers pass the Thorns on to Westside, Timbers will save a big chunk of money.

Boston Breakers are now defunct but ran their DA out of a local club called NEFC. Thorns could do the same. Particularly easy to have a Timbers Alliance club run the program since they are all already under the Timbers umbrella. Makes more sense to run the girls academy out of a youth club anyway. More stability if NWSL fails. Breakers folded but the Breakers gda will continue on at NEFC. Why would anyone care anyway? It doesn't really matter and would be the same Thorns gda program.

Keep in mind--the GDA is a USSDA program, not an NWSL program. It's meant to find and train players for the USWNT. (And arguably, it's secondary purpose is to keep ECNL from monopolizing the college recruiting pipeline).

Unfortunately, the economics of professional women's soccer don't support subsidized training for girls. As one of the resident ECNL trolls likes to say before telling a whopper, "just the facts".

It would do a major disservice to the kids if they dump this on Westside. Probably the least capable coaching staff (on the girls side) as proven over the last 4-5 years.

First of all, no reason to subsidize Thorns Academy when the female players overwhelmingly come from rich families. The few exceptions will always get scholarships. Thorns subsidized out of the goodness of their heart but honestly it was a poor business decision.

Second, USSDA doesn't care where Thorns runs their academy out of. Not even against any rules. GDA rules state not allowed to charge tryout fee, must practice a minimum of 4x/wk, etc. USSDA doesn't even care that Thorns don't follow actual rules so why would they care when they wouldn't even be breaking any rules? They simply want all the NWSL teams to have an associated GDA program.

Third, having a girls DA in Oregon is a great thing and Thorns did great by GDA this year. Tons of money spent and a great almost free opportunity for the players. If they keep it as is, great. If they run it through one of their Alliance clubs and/or charge more, I totally understand. Most girls DA programs across the nation are not subsidized.

Some GDA clubs already charge full price. The cost is what the clubs decide to charge. US Soccer is not subsidizing much.
