Wow if you google him he sounds like a real creep who is probably, definitely facing some well deserved time. Yikes:

I've never heard of the Portland Academy that he founded (kind of sounds like he ditched it though to more easily target victims as described in the above link).

Most clubs do background checks on everyone. I guess as the founder, one could squeak by.

This is a legit story, but please in future use legit sources, not blogs. Anonymous accusations can wreck people's lives.

Curious to see if he violated his terms and conditions or was still under court supervision. The conviction was 20 years ago and was a disgustingly easy misdemeanor (given the incredibly high rate of recidivism rate of sexual offenders they should be tossed into prison forever). Definitely the owner could skirt the background check easily. Another problem with checks is if an offender has no record yet nothing will come up, and that's more likely if the person is young. It's an issue parents should always consider when evaluating clubs. Google searches are an easy place to start.

All clubs' coaches and BODs are required to have background checks done every year.

Is this a club or a soccer training entity? What is required to operate a for-profit youth business in Oregon? I told some families to make sure they checked into background checks on any training entity.

This is not a case of a local 501c3 club hiring a registered sex offender to coach teams.

Not at all, it's a case of someone claiming to be a coach and forming a private business centered around their delusion. This individual is not part of the fabric of organized youth soccer in Oregon, which has it's own failings. This is con artist with layers of titles tied to many obscure/shady 'business's' who happened to choose the sport of Soccer as one of his intersections with the unsuspecting public.

conjuring up the name 'Portland Soccer Academy' Which is sadly close in name to a prominent club FC Portland Academy.

This is one reason I would do research if you are joining some of the less known pop up training environments. Please look out for your children and do your Home work. At the bigger clubs they are pretty consistent about background checks and doing what they can do (even though some creeps sneak by) but a lot of these training academies are a bit slacker on the rules, and often don't do what they should to protect your children. If you notice, some of these are opened by those who can not get employed elsewhere or have a shady background that the big clubs wont touch.

Agreed - a good reminder to do some homework if you're doing anything with a coach or trainer outside any established youth sports organizations. Beyond any state or league regulations on background checks, a club that cares about its business wants to avoid any and all possible scandals and will do its due diligence on staff. If something makes you uneasy, check it out and don't let your kids near it until you do.
