    NEPSAC Girls 2014

Season starts TODAY with Tabor hosting Middlesex. Who looks good this year? Will Choate, Nobles, Rivers, Tabor, Pingree and Brewster make it to the finals again this year? Will the top teams rebound from the loss of key seniors? Will new contenders arise?

    What do you think?

Tabor Middlesex was a scrimmage. 1-1. Both coaches played their entire roster, so maybe not a good indication.

Tabor takes on Brooks on Saturday.

Didn't see the game, but the Brooks website says Brooks took 48 shots, and the Tabor keeper made 14 saves. If that's true, 2 take-aways:

            1. Tabor is really feeling the loss of their senior defenders from last year (though the new keeper must be pretty good; she has really big shoes to fill).

            2. With that many shots off frame, Brooks must subscribe to the "boot it honey" philosophy. Likely would have won if they'd taken the time to work the ball in, rather than just spraying it from all over the pitch.

1 (4) Noble and Greenough Dedham, MA 3-0-0 A 3-2 win over No. 3 Loomis, coupled with a draw to an unranked team by Chaote allows Nobles to vault into the top spot in this week's Prep Top 10.
2 (3) Hotchkiss School Lakeville, CT 3-0-0 Hotchkiss has yet to allow a goal this season.
3 (2) Loomis Chaffee Windsor, CT 1-1-1 Loomis slides a bit after a loss to new No. 1 Nobles and a draw with No. 7 Phillips Academy.
4 (1) Choate Rosemary Hall Wallingford, CT 2-0-1 Chaote has yet to concede a goal, but the scoreless draw with Greenwich Academy takes Choate out of the Prep Top 10 No. 1 spot for now.
5 (5) Governor's Academy Byfield, MA 2-0-0 Tricia Pollock delivered goals in both matches as Governor's defeated Thayer and Newton Country Day.
6 (9) Rivers School Weston, MA 2-0-1 Rivers defeated Worcester Academy and St. Paul's last week, but it was the previous week's draw with Phillips Academy that helps the team in the rankings this week.
7 (10) Phillips Andover Andover, MA 2-0-2 Phillips Academy tied Loomis last week, showing that the run of Loomis, Rivers and Phillips Academy might be closer to top of the Prep Top 10, instead of the bottom.
8 Brewster Academy Wolfeboro, NH 3-0-0 Keeper Bailey Kolinski came up big as Brewster recorded the program's first-ever win over Brooks School in a 2-1 decision last week.
9 (7) Tabor Academy Marion, MA 2-0-1 Tabor Academy, which tied Brooks to start the season, edged Milton Academy and handled Kimball Union last week.
10 (6) Brooks School North Andover, MA 1-1-1 Despite having the run of play, Brooks fell to Brewster Academy, moving this team to the bottom of the Top 10 for this week.

Who has Choate and Hotchkiss played that they get so much respect? The ISL schools all play each other and in many ways cancel each other out but some of these other programs are in poor leagues and shy away from other tough programs so the fact that they still keep getting such high rankings really demonstrates how poor this ranking actually is.

Govs at number 5 based upon wins against Thayer and NCDS? Both of those are relative cream puffs.

Everyone plays weak teams. The top teams in the west play each other in most cases. They also have some easy games as well. The top ISL teams also have several easy games. Andover has the toughest schedule year in and year out. They play teams like Choate and Loomis as well as all of the top ISL teams. I think that the top teams in the east and west are on a par with each other. Let's see how the season plays out.

Nobles is loaded this year and deserves to be number 1. I'm just not sold that Choate and Hotchkiss deserve as much respect as they are getting. Loomis has already stumbled enough to see that they aren't a top tier team. Maybe they right the ship later in the season but right now they don't deserve a number 3 ranking. If anything they are a bottom of the list team. Undefeated Lawrence and Groton probably deserve consideration over them and Brooks at this point in the season.
