Per ncaa requirements students must be progressing on track to complete a degree in a 5 year process. Again, because of problems with prerequisites it is pretty easy to fall behind the 5 year plan -- and that is assuming there are no issues with grades. I certainly know lots of engineers and doctors who repeated a course in undergrad.
Oh, I thought this is what started the discussion:

BU stated during recruit visit that if you were looking for pre med or physical therapy that it would not work with soccer training and schedule because of all the labs

Although definitively 'prohibitive' it sure seemed to sway the recruit from considering the school. This may just be the way the poster wrote the post but its interesting that it reads that the education gets in the way of soccer, not the other way around. Whatever.

Meant to say "NOT definitively prohibitive"

Understood what you are writing just fine. Where you show that you are beyond clueless is using the word shouldn't. No they shouldn't hinder academic success. We also shouldn't have hunger and war but the reality is we do. You pontificate like an academic with your head in the clouds and no sense of reality.

Equating a soccer program to hunger and war - now who is clueless. You clearly have rocks in your head because the world revolves around soccer in your feeble mind.

          Have a nice day.

Missing the point but no sense continuing this.

That sounds about right in terms of the way athletics is viewed by those who run the athletic departments - "education gets in the way of sports".

Where'd you ever get it in your head that a big time D1 program like Carolina gives a hoot about its players academics?

If you want to have a school care about your sports-playing kids academic future then stay out of big time sports. It's not for the timid. You wanna be in the big time show at a top sports university like Carolina, then understand that sports commitments give no ground to academic commitments. Practices, films, weights, training sessions, travel, etc all come first and foremost.

Don't like it, either stay out of the big time, or give in to the reality and sign up for a meaningless major.

The easy fix to all these athletic scandals is to just get rid of athletic scholarships and return universities to places of learning.

Reality aside - do you think this is right?

Not the OP and I definitely don't think it is right. Especially for the big sports - basketball and football - the big schools make millions off those backs of those players. Sure a few will go pro and make big $. Most will hopefully graduate and have received some kind of education - and for some sports was the only way they ever would have gotten to college. But plenty of kids also drop out because they get injured, cut, can't hack it any longer or are in over their heads academically.

But when there's that much money involved, things won't change.

Love the guy who wants to fixate on what is "right" and ignore the realities of the entire situation, shows a real clear understanding of what is happening and that kids are actually getting screwed over in situations like this. He comes off like Nero with Rome burning.

I posted post prior to yours. I agree there is nothing that will change. Players from all sports need to go in with clear heads about what the possible outcomes are. I think too many get caught up in the status, are pushed by parents, etc. and don't understand the long-term consequences of it all. You'd hope there is an knowledgable adult in their lives to help guide them but I'm sure 95% don't.

Unfortunately people like that person only see one side of the Rubic's Cube. They live in a fantasy world where the education takes priority over all other practical matters. That is one of the reasons why you never see any meaningful dialogue on this site about D1 recruiting that doesn't degenerate into a D1 vs D3 battle. From their vantage point if you strictly focus on the education then none of the really awful stuff will ever happen because it really doesn't apply to the types of education they personally believe are worthwhile.

So answer the question then - reality aside, is it right? Yes or No?
