Cost? The actual tuition cost isn’t much when you think about the hours involved. And pretty sure nearly every club offers financial assistance for those that need it. The travel is the cost. No easy way around that one, but if it means enough for a kid what’s wrong with working to raise money to offset those costs? Everyone wants things handed to them. Work for it and you’ll appreciate it more. If it doesn’t mean enough to you to do that, then don’t complain about it.
Youth soccer is far better organized now than it used to be, the competition is better and safety has been taken into account. If numbers are down it’s for the reasons above. And that’s not a bad thing. By U14, there simply aren’t enough quality players. High school isn’t going to take everyone. College soccer not likely an option. Kids see that and move on to other things.

It needs to have an organizational element to it and coaching (in addition to pickup). On the men’s side, the club’s foot the bill because they are making hundreds of millions from their first teams. Not the case here. Plus, there are more opportunities over here. Lacrosse is now huge. Field hockey growing. Basketball is big business.

Men who have the balls and skills to go pro after HS are trying the pro path, either MLS or the very rare ones who can hack it abroad. in the long run that will (or in theory will) help the men's NT get better. For the women they have fewer options. The US women's pro opportunities are so limited and poor quality. Plenty have questioned Pugh's decision to walk away from what was no doubt a full ride to a great school to go pro and do NT. She's still young so we'll see where she takes it. A few other top players are going abroad as other countries ramp up their investment in women's soccer, but once they've gotten their degrees.

She’s fast and talented and will most likely take over one of the forward spots as the others age out.

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostGood point. Actually quite a few faster and even better players though Pugh is great. It’s all about hype to promote the popularity of the team. Main thing at the time was Pugh was cute and marketable. Rapinoe ended up being better(IMHO) and the most popular though. Kind of like that old show CHIPS where they set it up and planned for the big heart throb star to be the blond actor whose name I don’t even remember... But it was his sidekick Latino Erik Estrada as “Ponch” who carried the show and was the popular one. Coaches (not even in male European academies!) are good at predicting which players will develop best over time. Pugh might still end up a star player on the USWNT but my bet is now on Rose Lavelle or some newcomer. A heck of a lot of talented players in the pipeline. There is no conspiracy but soccer is a weird sport where talent is intangible and so one coach’s star is another coach’s pine rider or not on the team. It’s also a team sport where chemistry is crucial.

As for Alex Morgan...
"Pay-to-play is a terrible thing because it makes becoming an elite player harder for low income kids! By the way, if you want to be great you should have your parents hire one of these Beast Mode trainers at $150/hour if you want to be able to compete with the training top players do."
