See above. The high $45k price on the tuition range is for international students and the low is Canadian Quebec residents. Not exactly cheap for foreigners. McGill is a top private university so more expensive; maybe a public university would be cheaper, but not much cheaper than in-state tuition at UMass.

Uof Miami has the upper hand in marine biology over most schools, but that's it.

Like sooooo many other threads, this one is easy for the very top tier soccer players and top tier students. It really only becomes difficult when you are down a rung or two and the differences between the choices are fairly mundane. But then again who is really going to get all whipped up about schools like Richmond or UVM.

When it comes to bragging rights, kids' and college are very high on the list of topics. And bragging about college can take many different forms: the prestige or brand name of the school, playing a big time sport at a big time school, how much $ one spent on the experience, how much $ one got to pay for school, grades, etc. It's why the elite are willing to spend hundreds of $000's to get admitted to USC, Yale, Georgetown, etc.
I'm curious as to folks' opinions on this site: would the average MA dad rather brag about having a kid playing soccer at a top 50 program or have a kid be just a regular student at HYP? I'm leaning toward soccer, but wavering...

A college education is the goal, and soccer (or lacrosse, basketball, dance and violin) is just the potential avenue for getting there. If soccer led to high-paying, prestigious careers as a pro player for lots of kids, then that would be the focus in this country. It is not; soccer is a pathway to college - at least for so many people that frequent this site.

Even all the pros say to pick college for the school NOT for the soccer. Made a pact with my dd to not even consider a college interested for her for soccer if she wouldn’t apply to that school if soccer wasn’t part of the equation. Made the deal before recruiting so it’s been easy to stay grounded and only look at schools where she’d apply even if she was injured and couldn’t play soccer again.
The top 50 program versus HYP is interesting but really a false choice. As BTNT would ask, how many people realistically have such a great problem. The truth is that for New England elite parent types either scenario would be superb....and if your kid can do HYP and play soccer? In the latter scenario most should probably go with that unless the kid is not just a top 50 program kid but a top 50 national recruit in any given year. The latter yields the best academic/soccer combo which is Stanford or Duke with UCLA, UVA and UNC right behind.

Same goes for the Ivies, Duke, Vanderbilt, etc. and D3s like MIT, Cal Tech, Chicago, Harvey Mudd, Amherst, Pomona, Johns Hopkins, etc. There is no hatred and UCLA is a great school and better in sports than probably all the others except Stanford. Academically, UCLA simply isn’t one of the upper elite schools though.

One ranking venue for world universities and med schools ranks UCLA at #7 in the world, ahead of most Ivies, Duke, MIT, etc.
US News ranks UCLA med school at #6 in the USA above Cornell, Duke, NYU, Vandy, Michigan, etc.
Some seem to be clueless about the public Ivies....historically Cal-Berkeley, UCLA, UVA, Michigan and UNC. UCLA is pushing Cal for top public university in the country.

Apparently more of that 'earned narcissism' going around.
You know you're in the super prep elite New England scene when UCLA can't make the cut.
