Both of those teams are skilled enough to play up a year anyway. Vancouver did last year but Salem seems reluctant for whatever reason. Either way it’s a cakewalk to the state cup podium for Salem because their biggest competition the last two years is gone.

I totally agree that birth year is foolish and really hurts the u18-19 years. But Salem’s solution wasn’t what was best for their entire club. Eugene did the same thing with their 99 team and shafted their 00’s and 01s in the process.

Curious, why do you think they are rec players?

If the major majority 02 parents had wanted to make a super team, they would have gone birth year because the 2002 group would’ve been much stronger than even the ***c02 team. The Salem 02s would be in a better soccer place if they had but that would’ve meant shafting their 01 team mates and best friends. Either way many players and teams were getting shafted by the birth year change. I can’t blame them for the choice to stay together. They made the choice they wanted because they are still together and will go seemlessly into this year and next. Yes, it shafted everyone else in the club but that’s the Director’s fault for allowing them to have the choice. If an adult goes into a store with 5 hungry children, gives a 20 dollar bill to just one child and let’s that one child get and eat whatever they want and tells them they don’t need to share, it’s not the child’s fault that they bought 20$ worth of candy & pop and ate it all till they were sick & left all the other children hungry. That’s why clubs have directors. Directors are supposed to help all the players and teams, not just one favored son. Don’t blame the 01 team for trying to look out for their own little family.
Eugene is even worse because the DOC coached the 99 team, which benefited greatly from his decision not to split them into birth years. It backfired the last two years when Westside knocked them off in state cup. But along the way he completely decimated the 00 and 01 age groups, weekend the 02 group, and earned a ton of animosity. Almost every top 00, 01, and 02 girl in Eugene has either quit soccer or is playing in Portland. The few good players that are left (and it's very few) are there only for financial or logistical reasons (not everyone can do a drive to Portland on a regular basis). And strangely enough, the first team in their club that went full birth year from the start and didn't give any players to the next older team is coached by...you guessed it...the club's DOC. His teams benefited on both sides of the birth year fiasco. That's why we left Eugene - DOC caring more about his teams than what's best for the entire club.

Can see the Eugene director selfishly helping his own teams but where was the motivation for the Salem director? Does the Salem director coach the 01s?
