Nobody talking about Steve Sampson's 3-6-1?

What a mess that was...talking about trying to be smarter than everyone else....

3 in the back is really 5 in the back often because the outside wingers hav to get back. What age? If younger, the other team probably can't make a far cross, so all 3 can shift wide as a unit if the ball is out there. Younger players might not need to get back therefore... And probably can't go box to box physically. Just get numbers up around the ball.

3 in the back: two marking backs on two forwards with a free defender, or 3 'flat' moving like they are tied together with a bungee cord. Pressure, cover, balance. In this case your keeper has to sweep up any successful cross or through ball.

Although it's about the players you have, it can also be about the other team: how many forwards? A 3 can be redundant against a lone striker, but you don't want 3v3 at your 18 against a 4-3-3. Simplify: usually look to have an extra man in your defense.
