    Thorns Done?

Pretty unlikely that the Thorns will make the NWSL playoffs this year. They have 22 points with 2 games remaining (max 28 points). Three other teams (Washington, Chicago, KC) already have 28 points and either 2 or 3 games to play. Scenarios look like this:

FC Kansas City are in the playoffs. Even if the Thorns catch them in the table, FC KC holds the tie-breaker.

Washington Spirit need to lose their last 3 games (KC, Thorns, Seattle) while the Thorns win both of theirs (one game is between Thorns and Spirit). AND the Thorns need to make up the 5 goal advantage Washington currently holds in Goal Differential.

Chicago Red Stars need to lose their last 3 games (all against teams well out of the playoff picture) while the Thorns win both of theirs. Thorns hold the tie-breaker here.

The Thorns only real hope is to catch Washington Spirit AND score enough goals to overcome the GD difference. It's a mighty slim chance at best.

The screwed up model that forces their best players to miss a bunch of games and even more training time. Makes it tough to win missing your five best players.

Don't get me wrong, the World Cup is great for women's soccer. But it does hurt the ability of teams to win at times.

That's the way the cookie crumbles. They also benefit from having so many national team players.

Yep. If they had won the games when they had their stars they would be in the playoffs. Will Providence Park be sold out for the champ game if Thorns aren't playing?

What, they are not going to play it at some H.S field in Kansas? Someone needs to stick a fork in this league.

Only one chance left. Chicago is now in the playoffs. Just Washington and Portland left to fight for 4th place.

More national team players than any other team and can't even make the playoffs. Maybe this weekends game will be their very last home game...

Sorry you hate women's soccer. Such a sad creature you are.

Will they be back next year? Too many "stars", not enough "players". Who goes to make room for some real talent?

Just retired off a couple pieces of dead wood. Get rid of Morgan next.

This is Allie Long's team, no doubt. She's the heart and soul. Let her decide who stays and who goes.

They need a solid center back and they will be fine. If they traded for Julie Johnston or Becky Sauerbrunn they would be a top 2 team again. They also need to sign Vero and keep Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath healthy.
