Shift to Jan. 1 cutoff next year or year after?

So what are you hearing on the shift to January 1 as the birth date cutoff for your league. Will your kid's club/league make the move starting with next tryout or the year after? Rumor has it that ECNL for sure is making the switch next summer to comply with the "best practice".

With the SSG mandate -- what do you think about the new "build out" line for 9s and 10s? Is the field too small for 11s ans 12s to allow for keeper punts?

Still a couple years away at the earliest. U.S. Soccer doesn't want to deal with the backlash.

It hurts less if you pull the bandaid off quickly. Just do it already so folks can stop worrying about it and everyone can move on. The sky won't fall.

Our DOC said when it does happen current teams will be grandfathered in so they will stay the same

          Keeper punts?
If your DD's team anywhere up to 13 years old has your keeper punting all of the time you'd better find another team.

Your GK at those ages should be bowling and/or playing out of the back.

What they should do with the 7v7 model at U9 and U10 is when the GK has the ball the other team should have to retreat to the halfway line....punting should not be allowed so players can begin playing out of the back. But you won't see this in the cauldron of 1990's style of coaching here in the PDX metro area. Hell, we don't even have one quality ECNL coach that is truly qualified to coach at that level let alone work with the 8's to 13's.

These rules have already been implemented at least partially; punting was prohibited in the Portland development leagues I saw last year (FC, OYSA) and I believe Southside's is also prohibiting. In OYSA, on goalkicks opponents are required to sit in their own half until kick; believe FC's league is moving that direction too.

There are some unintended consequences of these rule modifications and I think they have been implemented as much to prevent head injuries from headers as they are to promote playing out of the back, but it seems like all of the Portland leagues are thinking about this subject.

I agree with everything you said except for heading the soccer ball.

There is no evidence that purposeful heading of the soccer ball is bad for you.
Where head injuries occur is when head collide while trying to head the ball.

Some will argue that there are 100's of players from the earlier days that are showing brain damage late into their lives...this is because the leather ball that was used in those days were very heavy and as hard as the head on your shoulders.

Head injuries from purposeful heading of the ball is a myth

If Timbers really wanted to stress development they would disallow all GK punts below U13. But that requires the "encroachment" line that the other team can't cross until the 1st defender has received the ball from the GK.

At last winters US Soccer general meetings the motion couldn't even get enough support to get tabled for discussion. There just isn't a compelling reason to make the change at levels below USSDA (boys) and ECNL (girls). And even then it doesn't really make any difference. The elite players are already being put into age groups based on birth year in ODP, id2, US Soccer Academy, Uxx National teams, etc. There is no need for regular teams around the nation to be on the birth year calendar.

The changes are already made. The only question is whether clubs/leagues will follow the proscribed "best practice" and put them in force starting with next tryouts, or wait the additional year.

Oh brother.. The"keeper should bowl the ball" guy is back. Here's a clue.. If you don't learn to punt/kick the ball, when will you learn to do it?

In practice. Every punt is a 50/50 ball at best. Bowling it out is 99+% that you'll maintain possession.

Finally! Kids want to play on the best team they can. Kids and teams will be fine and soccer will develop more top players with elite and club programs on the same age groups. The players currently in one age group for club and another for elite play are being screwed so many months of potential elite players never reach that potential. If your kid only wants to play soccer to be with particular friends, play rec. Otherwise, get on board and breathe easy. Everything will be fine.

It's up to the leagues to make the changes. It'll be a mess when and if it actually happens unless they start it at just one age group (U11) and let the olders stay together until they age out. You'll be amazed at how many kids, especially girls, will stop playing soccer if they can't play with their friends anymore.
