To the OP - obviously you have a freshmen. Don't sweat it if they don't make V at first. Its not necessarily a bad thing to get your feet wet with players closer to their own age. If they are a top JV player they'll get a ton of playing time and it's a great confidence booster. Because there will injuries and changes, coaches often bring up JV players during the season.

I'm completely new to HS soccer so go easy. Do most HS have a freshmen team? When I was in school it was just V and JV but apparently our town has a freshmen team. Didn't know that was a thing. But some 9th graders make JV?

If you're concerned about any of this, then your kid is probably a rec-level player who might sit on the varsity bench as a senior. Any player with real ability is playing varsity from Day 1 freshman year. The future D1 college players are starting varsity as freshmen, having a significant impact, and making all-conference teams (even the kids at schools with dinosaur coaches).

So because I was trying to figure it out what exactly a freshman team is (i.e. do all freshman play on it or are they able to play JV) I'm a troll? Yeah. That makes sense.
Also not sure why my kid's ability is of concern. It's HS soccer in MA, not the national team. Plenty of kids who are "rec level" in the grand scheme. Just most parents don't know it.
