This thread comes up every year and is typically driven by frenzied parents of club players that are petrified that their kid will be on the JV or Frosh squad.

Bottom line is that the vast majority of 9th graders would struggle mightily in a varsity match. The physicality that 17 and 18 year old players bring is often way too much for 14 incoming 9th graders that are still in braces. Use the year to improve, gain confidence and encourage your daughter to do everything she can to be the very best player on the JV team. The rest will take of itself. Egos aside, no on improves by sitting on the end of the bench for the fall.

In our town, there have been a few players in recent years that have gone on to play at Division 1 schools. Ironically, all of them played on the JV squad as 9th graders. The coach had the philosophy that 95 pound 9th graders don't gain confidence by being run over by kids who outweigh them by 50 pounds

Don't sweat freshman year especially if you are at a bigger high school.

OMG! This is HS soccer. It matters only slightly more than MS soccer. Useless you are at a L or LL school it is (in most cases) just an intramural activity. If you are serious about soccer and playing in college then find an ENCL or DA program and follow their program.

Most HS coaches are not qualified and do not have the time to properly train a team. They have, at most, 1 week of preseason and then 12-15 games over 7 weeks. Think about it!

Yes just sit back and let the players enjoy the game.

That is highly unusual. Plenty won't even qualify for conference playoff or states, let alone make deep runs. To get that many you have to essentially run all the way to the finals in each.

That’s not that unusual. My son played 24 games including preseason. Lost in conference semis and first round of LL
