As others have said, this is simply going to be ECNL 2.0 when it is all said and done (even the boys side appears to be going in the same direction). If ECNL got it all right, can't they just be declared the winner and let them go?
Your original gut reaction was correct. NYCFC isn't a net new program. It's replacing other programs like World Class

NYCFC is a great club for sure and an a face saver and PR win for USSF

Yes no total change in number but NYCFC is a good get as they say. Last I checked EM still had nothing on their website about GDA, just ECNL and NPL. That's suspicious since clubs are running tryouts now. So they could drop out, as could others. Just two months ago the number of clubs was 74, now it's 70....if clubs hold tryouts and don't like what they see others might pull the plus also. This whole venture is going to be in flux for some time. Buckle up.

Weird that it isn't starting until spring of 2017. What's up with that? How would they run tryouts? Or is it just a typo?

NYCFC is building their new training facility directly across the street from the World Class facility. World Class is a current youth affiliate playing in the NYCFC development league for boys. When NYCFC purchased the land across the street, they also made a financial "donation" to World Class to upgrade its facilities.

World Class was admitted to GDA originally, but with NYCFC wanting to get into GDA it made sense for them to collaborate with World Class. In fact the founder of World Class is going to be the girls technical director for the NYCFC GDA program and all GDA activities will be housed and run at World Class....but the team will play in the GDA league under the NYCFC banner.

This will be great for the girls who make the team as NYCFC will likely fund the program 100% (just like on the boys side).

Although rumor has it EM did back out but they are on Long Island so probably not a driver on this
World Class gave their GDA spot to NYCFC. World Class is a youth affiliate of NYCFC.
East Meadow perhaps is giving their GDA spot to the Cosmos. EM is a youth affiliate of the Cosmos.

USSF wants to have every professional team in the US (both men's and women's) to have their own youth academy (free of charge). GDA/DA teams that do not have a professional team sitting on top of them (like BS and OW), will likely eventually fall by the wayside as they will struggle to compete with "professionalized and free to play" clubs (MLS, NASL, USL and NWSL).

The pro academy system is still in its infancy. Over time they will pull away from non-pro academy teams. OW is doing a great job now ....no denying. But this won't last long....do you think OW or BS will ever win the U16 or U18 national DA championship? Highly unlikely.

BS top players are being picked off by NYCFC so they will always struggle with retaining talent and winning in the DA league.

It's a partnership between WC and NYCFC

The Revs suck. Cra*coaching and an owner who doesn't even care about the pro team, let alone academy teams. Overall MLS teams tend to be stronger than non MLS ones, and many are plunking serious money into the their programs and even adding a residential component. Long term that is what USSF is looking for. Ideally they'd like it for the girls too, but there's no money in women's soccer yet.

Great for the Cosmos....they have a new owner, and now a potential partnership with a global company with over 15,000 locations and over $4 billion in revenue!
