    College Sports Cuts continue

Unreal another men’s soccer program bites the dust which brings the total to 3 now (Cincy, Valpo and App St). Sad really. Also Brown Univ is cutting 9 sports due to COVID19....this is Brown can you imagine what’s coming down the pike for less well to do universities and colleges? Fingers crossed we don’t see any more cuts.

Reading the info on Brown, seems like COVID-19 wasn’t the main reason for the cuts. Basically they offered the 3rd most D1 varsity sports in the country but were not competitive in almost all of them, so the cuts were also about trying to be more competitive in at least some of the sports.

Nearly all schools are evaluating the role of athletics and what they can continue to justify running. Ivies don't have athletic scholarships so it's all about the expenses of running teams and whatthe perceivedvalueis. The more popular sports that contribute to a campus community and alumni donations will be fine. 'Tiny' sports are the most at risk, followed by perennial basement dwellers.

If opportunities for scholarships and elite college admissions start to disappear that will have a ripple effect across the youth sports industry. Taking sports back to doing it for enjoyment without the absurd costs and travel isn't a bad thing

That may be just what we need...we spend roughly 15-20k per year in total for my kids to play youth soccer....that’s insane.

I can't even imagine how you can spend that much, even between club fees and travel. What else do you spend on?

If you have 3 kids playing at the top levels, could get there pretty easily.

Ah, for 3 kids, that's pretty reasonable.

Do the math across just 2-3 years - that's a full year of college paid for one kid. Add up what you've spent on all three since they were 8 and you'll want to shoot yourself.

Many families are re-assessing either out of economic necessity or by the general sanity checks this crisis has brought about. If there will be fewer college opportunities or money to play in college, that only increases the odds more families saying "enough".

The problem is all the travel with flights hotels meals rental cars etc it adds up. I’m not talking about just club fees and uniforms etc....

Families should be doing that anyway. Maybe the blind faith that some school is going to offer their kid is shaken. This is the thing, parents should have a pretty good idea of what the upside of their child is long before you get to the point of paying large amounts. Too many get swept along with others and dont look at that . If your kid does not show you enough to justify the sacrifices, move on. The places dropping womens soccer are probably not very good at it to begin with. There is a lack of honesty when assessing the reasons parents continue to spend on youth sports. A lot of it has to do with the fake notion that by NOT doing it they are somehow placing their kids at a disadvantage.

No way it should add up to $15k-20k a year for 1 kid.

Perhaps for those willing to stay at a Holiday Inn and eat at Golden Corral but I’m raising a D1 athlete- nothing less than 5 stars for us

Hopefully that D1 athlete learns how not to do this in college.

Peak recruiting/showcase years you can hit $10K without breaking a sweat, but much more than that means you're taking the whole family with you and that is a personal choice.

With all the budget cuts that is what many D1 athletes will be seeing.
